Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose voice defined Bollywood music through the 1970s and 80s, died in Mumbai aged 92, her family says.<\/p>\n
The two-time Grammy nominee died on Sunday at the Breach Candy Hospital, where she had been admitted for \u201cextreme exhaustion\u201d and a chest infection.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother passed away today. Her last rites will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai,\u201d her son Anand Bhosle told reporters on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was \u201cdeeply saddened\u201d by her death.<\/p>\n
In a post on X, Indian President Droupadi Murmu said her death is \u201can irreparable loss to music lovers\u201d.<\/p>\n
Born on September 8, 1933, to a musical family, Bhosle began singing as a child alongside her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, after their father\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
Often compared with Mangeshkar \u2013 revered as \u201cIndia\u2019s nightingale\u201d who died in 2022 \u2013 Bhosle forged her own path, embracing genres from pop to folk.<\/p>\n
Her early life was marked by struggle, including a turbulent marriage at 16.<\/p>\n
She went on to become one of Indian cinema\u2019s most versatile and celebrated voices, receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and earning two Grammy nominations.<\/p>\n
Bhosle also collaborated with global artists well into her later years, including a recent feature on British virtual band Gorillaz\u2019s album The Mountain (Parvat).<\/p>\n
Tributes also poured in from other music legends and Bollywood actors.<\/p>\n
Two-time Grammy winner AR Rahman posted a picture with Bhosle on Instagram and wrote in the caption, \u201cShe lives forever with her voice and aura \u2026 What an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n
Singer and composer Shankar Mahadevan told the Press Trust of India news agency that it is \u201ca very sad day\u201d for everyone in India\u2019s music industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery Indian is heartbroken today. Her music will never perish as long as humanity exists,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Bollywood actress and Member of Parliament Hema Malini, whose movies Bhosle sang for, posted on X: \u201cIt is especially hard for me as I have an emotional connect with Asha ji \u2013 she has made many of my songs so popular with her unique voice and style.\u201d<\/p>\n
Beyond music, she nurtured her passion for food, launching her \u201cAsha\u2019s\u201d restaurant chain in Dubai and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
