Hungary\u2019s longtime Prime Minister Viktor Orban has conceded defeat in the country\u2019s parliamentary election after partial official results showed Peter Magyar\u2019s Tisza party winning a landslide victory.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrime Minister Viktor Orban just called to congratulate us on our victory,\u201d Magyar posted on social media Sunday, as his party stood at 52.49 percent and Orban\u2019s Fidesz at 38.83 percent, with 53.45 percent of precincts counted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, Hungary!\u201d Magyar posted on X.<\/p>\n
Reporting from the banks of the Danube River in the capital, Budapest, where Magyar\u2019s supporters had gathered, Al Jazeera\u2019s Step Vaessen described scenes of jubilation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat an evening here,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s all over for Viktor Orban after 16 years. They can barely believe it, but it\u2019s absolutely happening.\u201d<\/p>\n
For his part, Orban told his followers that he had \u201ccongratulated the victorious party\u201d after a \u201cpainful\u201d but \u201cclear\u201d result.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe \u2060responsibility and possibility \u2060of governing was not given to us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are going to serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from opposition as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
The partial count showed Tisza ahead in 95 of Hungary\u2019s 106 constituencies, with the party projected to win more than 130 mandates in the 199-seat parliament.<\/p>\n
Vaessen said \u201cthe comfortable two-thirds majority\u201d that Magyar\u2019s party was projected to win was \u201cvery important\u201d, as it would allow it to amend Hungary\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n
The National Election Office said turnout by 6:30pm<\/a> (16:30 GMT) was more than 77 percent, a record number in any election in Hungary\u2019s post-Communist history.<\/p>\n Orban\u2019s defeat will have significant implications not only for Hungary, but for the European Union, Ukraine and beyond.<\/p>\n It will likely spell an end to Hungary\u2019s adversarial role inside the EU, possibly opening the way for a 90 billion euro ($105bn) loan to war-battered Ukraine blocked by Orban<\/a>.<\/p>\n Defeat for Orban could also mean the eventual release of EU funds to Hungary that the bloc had suspended due to what Brussels said was Orban\u2019s erosion of democratic standards.<\/p>\n Orban\u2019s exit would also deprive Russian President Vladimir Putin of his main ally in the EU and send shockwaves through Western right-wing circles, including US President Donald Trump\u2019s MAGA followers.<\/p>\n![\"People](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26102700910530-1776023214.jpg\")
