{"id":601890,"date":"2026-04-13T20:10:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T20:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/601890\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T20:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T20:10:09","slug":"doug-mccallum-makes-surrey-mayoral-bid-official-with-some-lofty-promises-daily-hive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/601890\/","title":{"rendered":"Doug McCallum makes Surrey mayoral bid official with some lofty promises | Daily Hive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum and the Safe Surrey Coalition promised a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/surrey-mayor-future-announcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">major announcement<\/a> today, and that announcement is here.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s official: McCallum is taking another mayoral run and will be running alongside some Surrey heavyweights.<\/p>\n<p>In a short Facebook announcement ahead of the full press release, some of McCallum\u2019s previous accolades were touted, like \u201cDoug built SkyTrain to Clayton Heights\u201d and Doug brought UBC to Surrey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The post also said, \u201cDoug kept your taxes low. And Doug is not done yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it shed light on some of his promises ahead of the next Surrey mayoral election this October.<\/p>\n<p>A news release from the <a href=\"https:\/\/safesurrey.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Safe Surrey Coalition<\/a>\u00a0suggests that McCallum will bring the SkyTrain to Newton, offer a zero per cent property tax, create the Surrey Centre Opportunity Zone, and bring safe streets to every family.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement states that Surrey would see zero per cent property tax increases for four years under a new regime.<\/p>\n<p>It also promises to bring a new swimming Pool to Clayton Heights, and says that McCallum would \u201cdesignate Crescent Beach and Ocean Park as protected heritage zones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoug will make Surrey a global city. Let\u2019s make sure he has the team to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCallum is also committed to bringing the Surrey Police Service more boots on the ground, and to bring in a new helicopter within the first 90 days of taking office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aircraft will provide aerial surveillance and rapid response capability to combat gang activity and extortion across the city,\u201d the announcement says.<\/p>\n<p>McCallum\u2019s team includes councillors Mandeep Nagra and Doug Elford.<\/p>\n<p>A huge focus of McCallum\u2019s announcement is his plan to make Surrey a \u2018global city\u2019 using city\u2019s like Dubai, New York and London as an example. The Opportunity Zone is described as a \u201cbold initiative\u201d to eliminate city fees, cut red tape and bring in \u201ctransformational projects\u201d like the ones that changed those other major cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to build a place in Surrey where ambition is rewarded and bureaucracy does not exist. Big ideas and small businesses will find the same open door. That is how you change a skyline.
