The gap between Canada\u2019s richest\u00a0and\u00a0poorest\u00a0grew\u00a0last year as financial markets gained while interest payouts declined\u00a0and\u00a0the job market softened, said\u00a0Statistics\u00a0Canada\u00a0on Monday.<\/p>\n

The agency says the\u00a0income\u00a0gap, measuring the difference\u00a0in\u00a0the share of disposable\u00a0income\u00a0between households\u00a0in\u00a0the top 40 per cent\u00a0and\u00a0those\u00a0in\u00a0the bottom 40 per cent, reached 46.7 percentage points\u00a0in\u00a02025.<\/p>\n

The result compared with a gap of 46.4 percentage points a year earlier.<\/p>\n

The wider gap came as the lowest-income\u00a0households saw wages rise slower than the overall average,\u00a0and\u00a0saw their investment\u00a0income\u00a0fall because of lower interest payments on savings, the agency said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0Statistics\u00a0Canada\u00a0says the top 20 per cent of the\u00a0wealth\u00a0distribution accounted for 65.7 per cent of Canada\u2019s total net worth at the end of\u00a02025, averaging $3.5 million per household.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0contrast, the bottom 40 per cent of the\u00a0wealth\u00a0distribution held three per cent of Canada\u2019s net worth, averaging $81,650 per household.<\/p>\n

The gap\u00a0in\u00a0wealth\u00a0between the top 20 per cent\u00a0and\u00a0the bottom 40 per cent was 62.7 percentage points at the end of\u00a02025, up 0.6 percentage points from a year earlier.<\/p>\n

Insolvency practice MNP Ltd. said Monday that the rising divide could also be seen\u00a0in\u00a0financial surveys, though it also noted signs of overall stability.<\/p>\n

It said its survey-based debt index has held steady over the last year as Canadians have become cautious on spending, but that financial pressures remain uneven.<\/p>\n

The average amount Canadians have left at month-end hit an all-time time high of $1,000 as of its March survey, up from $907 at the end of November.<\/p>\n

The results, however, also showed that 43 per cent are within $200 or less of not being able to meet their monthly spending needs, up from 41 per cent last quarter. Twenty-nine per cent say they already aren\u2019t making enough to cover bills\u00a0and\u00a0debt payments, up from 25 per cent.<\/p>\n

The survey of 2,000 adult Canadians between March 10\u00a0and\u00a011 was complied by Ipsos\u00a0and\u00a0is considered accurate to within 2.7 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.<\/p>\n

The firm\u2019s survey shows many Canadians are holding back on major financial decisions,\u00a0and\u00a0that nearly three quarters say rising prices for essentials are straining their finances.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany Canadians are not just feeling financial pressure, they are navigating an environment that continues to shift, increasing uncertainty\u00a0and\u00a0making it more difficult to plan, budget,\u00a0and\u00a0stay ahead financially,\u201d said Grant Bazian, president of MNP Ltd.,\u00a0in\u00a0a news release.<\/p>\n
