The bloodline was not the \u201cFinal Destination<\/a>\u201d after all. On August 8, New Line and Warner Bros. announced (via Variety<\/a>) that \u201cFinal Destination 7<\/a>\u201d is officially in the works, complete with \u201cFinal Destination: Bloodlines\u201d co-writer Lori Evans Taylor on board. Also returning are producers Craig Perry, Sheila Hanahan Taylor, Jon Watts, Dianne McGunigle, and Toby Emmerich. Warren Zide will serve as executive producer.<\/p>\n

The news comes as the studio has yet another horror hit on their hands with \u201cWeapons<\/a>,\u201d the latest from \u201cBarbarian\u201d director Zach Cregger. In its opening weekend<\/a>, \u201cWeapons\u201d amassed an estimated $42.5 million at the domestic box office, an impressive debut for a movie that cost $38 million. Similarly, \u201cBloodlines\u201d opened to $51.7 million<\/a> in May off a $50 million budget. As of August 10, that movie has gone on to tally over $138 million<\/a> in North America and $285 million worldwide, bringing in a gigantic franchise haul for the New Line devision of Warner Bros.<\/p>\n

These horror hits also fall right in line with New Line\u2019s history<\/a>. It was, after all, once a fledgling studio that finally \u2014\u00a0after years of modest success \u2014\u00a0made it to the big time with Freddie Kruger and \u201cA Nightmare on Elm Street\u201d back in 1984. In recent years, additional horror franchises have added to the division\u2019s terrifying reputation, including \u201cThe Conjuring\u201d and \u201cIt\u201d series.<\/p>\n

The original \u201cFinal Destination\u201d<\/a> \u2014\u00a0released in 2000 \u2014\u00a0was a big hit for New Line in the days before its folding into Warner Bros., grossing $112 million worldwide against a $23 million budget. The four sequels released between the first entry and \u201cBloodlines\u201d performed similarly, though there was a long 14-year-gap after \u201cFinal Destination 5.\u201d<\/p>\n

The release and success of the latest \u201cDestination\u201d is not only a spotlight on New Line, but on the massive millennial nostalgia wave that has defined the summer of 2025. While, interestingly, the performance of the more Gen X-coded \u201cI Know What You Did Last Summer\u201d fell relatively flat (though it\u2019s done OK<\/a>), any and all things geared toward millennials has been met with some praise, either from critics or audiences or both. Just this weekend, \u201cFreakier Friday\u201d<\/a> \u2014\u00a0a sequel to the key 2003 millennial comedy \u201cFreaky Friday\u201d starring key millennial figurehead Lindsay Lohan \u2014\u00a0also raked in millions.<\/p>\n

Though \u201cThe Naked Gun\u201d might be considered more of a boomer sensation, its success, too, could be tied to the franchise\u2019s frequent play on cable television in the \u201990s and \u201900s \u2014\u00a0when most millennials discovered it, as well as the generation\u2019s love of \u201cBaywatch\u201d actress Pamela Anderson and \u201cTaken\u201d icon Liam Neeson.<\/p>\n

More and more millennial favorites are expected for returns in the year to come, too,\u00a0including \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d<\/a> (which reportedly will have scenes of people walking across streets in fabulous outfits), as well as \u201cPractical Magic 2,\u201d<\/a> another generational cable-staple turned fan favorite. Of course, 2024 also saw 30- and 40-somethings help power \u201cBeetlejuice Beetlejuice\u201d<\/a> to box office success.<\/p>\n

Horror flicks are often a safe investment, and we\u2019ve had more than our fair share recently that have borrowed on nostalgia \u2014\u00a0including \u201cHeart Eyes\u201d and \u201cThe Monkey.\u201d Clearly, at least in the case of \u201cFinal Destination,\u201d are ready to enjoy more roller coaster rides (or maybe not<\/a>) with familiar material.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The bloodline was not the \u201cFinal Destination\u201d after all.
