Global News is projecting Liberal candidate Danielle Martin has won Monday\u2019s byelection<\/a> in the federal riding of\u00a0University\u2014Rosedale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Martin was leading with 64 per cent of the vote as of midnight Eastern Tuesday, with nearly all votes counted.<\/p>\n

The riding had been represented by Liberal MP and former cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland since its creation in 2015 until her resignation earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Freeland, who had served as former prime minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s deputy and other high-profile cabinet roles, left Parliament to serve a special economic advisory role to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n

The Toronto-area riding was considered a safe seat for the Liberals, who nominated Martin, a physician and academic, as their candidate to potentially replace Freeland.<\/p>\n

Her opponents included Conservative candidate Don Hodgson, New Democratic candidate Serena Purdy and Green Party candidate Andrew Massey.<\/p>\n

The riding encompasses the University of Toronto\u2019s St. George campus and part of downtown Toronto, plus the inner-city neighbourhoods of Rosedale and Yorkville.<\/p>\n
