{"id":602754,"date":"2026-04-14T05:17:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T05:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/602754\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T05:17:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T05:17:17","slug":"carneys-liberals-projected-to-form-majority-with-3-byelection-victories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/602754\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney\u2019s Liberals projected to form majority with 3 byelection victories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister <a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/mark-carney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney<\/a> will have a majority government after the Liberals were projected to sweep all three federal <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/byelections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">byelections<\/a> that were held Monday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Global News projects Danielle Martin will keep the Toronto-area riding of University\u2013Rosedale in Liberal hands, while Liberal candidate Dolly Begum will win Scarborough Southwest.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal Tatiana Auguste is also projected to hold onto the Quebec riding of Terrebonne with a wider lead over the Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois than her one-vote general election win that was nullified earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11771450\/carney-liberal-majority-government-explained\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">That puts the party at 174 seats in the House of Commons, giving Carney a majority<\/a> \u2014 something not enjoyed by the Liberals since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Carney offered congratulations to Begum and Martin on social media, saying the country would benefit from their experience. He did not acknowledge his newfound majority government in either statement.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The win in Terrebonne came after midnight Eastern on Tuesday, with Auguste winning by over 700 votes with all polls reporting.<\/p>\n<p>Global News has full byelection results for all three ridings:<\/p>\n<p>The results mean the Liberals will be able to pass legislation without any opposition MPs or tie-breaking votes from the Speaker of the House of Commons if all Liberal MPs vote together.<\/p>\n<p>The Liberals were elected to a fourth straight government mandate last April with 169\u00a0seats, just shy of\u00a0the 172 needed for\u00a0a majority.<\/p>\n<p>Several Liberal MPs have retired since then, fluctuating the seat count. Two of those retirees,\u00a0Chrystia\u00a0Freeland and Bill Blair, prompted Wednesday\u2019s byelections in their respective former ridings of University\u2013Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest.<\/p>\n<p>The byelection in Terrebonne was triggered after the Supreme Court of Canada nullified Auguste\u2019s one-vote win for the Liberals over incumbent Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois MP Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9 in last year\u2019s general election. The court sided with a Bloc challenge that highlighted a mail-in ballot processing error.<\/p>\n<p>A number of MP defections to the Liberals from other parties set the stage for the government to cross the majority threshold Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Carney Liberals did not win a majority government through a general election or today\u2019s byelections,\u201d Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PierrePoilievre\/status\/2043874763949445479\" rel=\"nofollow\">a social media statement. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, it was won through backroom deals with politicians who betrayed the people who voted for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Breaking down the federal byelections'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776143835_459_GNMWISEMANBYELEXPREVIEWSTILL.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t3:45<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBreaking down the federal byelections\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Elections Canada said last week that 18,200 people in the Quebec riding cast ballots in advance elections in early April, which amounts to almost 20 per cent of people on the voters\u2019 list.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>The riding saw 68 per cent voter turnout in the 2025 election.<\/p>\n<p>Voters in the riding who spoke with Global News on Monday said they expected the byelection to be another tight race between Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste and Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9, who were both running again.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the ultimate toss-up,\u201d said Philippe Fournier, editor-in-chief of 338Canada, which tracks polling in Canadian elections.<\/p>\n<p>The Toronto-area ridings saw lower degrees of voter turnout at the advance polls, with 10,300 ballots cast before election day in Scarborough Southwest and 9,400 in University \u2014 Rosedale. This amounts to 12 and 10 per cent voter turnout respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In total, almost 38,000 people voted in advance polls.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tMajority comes after 5 MPs crossed floor\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Since December, five MPs have crossed the floor to the Liberals from the opposition benches in the House of Commons \u2014 four from the Conservatives and one from the New Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent\u00a0floor-crossing\u00a0occurred just last\u00a0week, when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11769468\/conservative-mp-marilyn-gladu-crosses-floor-liberals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ex-Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu joined the government caucus.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those actions have sparked accusations from the Conservatives and NDP that Carney was creating a majority with \u201cdirty backroom deals\u201d against the wishes of voters in those ridings. Carney, his party and the new Liberals MPs have all denied the accusations, and there are no rules prohibiting MPs from crossing the floor as others have done in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11799114\/billy-morin-liberal-floor-crossing-attempts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Conservative MP Billy Morin was caught on a hot mic<\/a> before a press conference in Ottawa on Monday saying the Liberals are trying to get him to cross the floor, but added he has no intention of leaving the Conservative caucus.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Politics<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>A senior government source tells Global News there are many ongoing conversations between the Liberals and Conservatives to get even more Tories to join the Liberal tent. A Conservative MP also told Global News that they believe more floor crossers will leave the Conservative caucus for the Liberals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will continue to lead that fight every day and in every way in Parliament, across the country and in the next election, when Canadians will reclaim the country we know and love,\u201d Poilievre said Monday after the Liberals were projected to form a majority.<\/p>\n<p>The Liberals\u00a0won a majority government in the 2015 general election that elevated Justin Trudeau to prime minister, but\u00a0they\u00a0failed to\u00a0gain equally decisive mandates in\u00a0the 2019 and 2021 elections.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11771450\/carney-liberal-majority-government-explained\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A majority for Carney\u00a0would\u00a0allow for legislation\u00a0to be passed\u00a0faster<\/a>\u00a0in the House of Commons, where Liberals control the majority of seats, but they could still face delays in committees, where membership does not reset and is based on the minority numbers in the last general election.<\/p>\n<p>Since coming into power, the Liberals has seen major bills on immigration, hate speech and bail reform stall, and passage of the government\u2019s budget bill took months.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The Liberals have put the blame for the delays on Conservatives, who helped fast-track Carney\u2019s major infrastructure projects and internal trade bill last year but have raised concerns about other major legislation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11771957\/ipsos-poll-carney-liberals-byelections-majority\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ipsos polling conducted exclusively for Global News<\/a> and released Sunday found 53 per cent of Canadians want the Liberals to win enough seats in Monday\u2019s byelections to give Carney a majority government.<\/p>\n<p>The poll found 47 per cent were opposed to the idea.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Liberals near majority as Mark Carney gains ground in new Ipsos poll'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/CARNEY_WEB.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t4:31<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLiberals near majority as Mark Carney gains ground in new Ipsos poll\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>While Poilievre has warned against giving the Liberals \u201cunchecked power\u201d with a majority, political experts say there will still be ways to hold Carney and his government to account \u2014 both within and outside the Liberal caucus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Carney still has to keep that majority together, he still has to keep the votes within the Liberal caucus on his side,\u201d Stewart Prest, a political science lecturer at the University of British Columbia, told Global News in an earlier interview.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Labour Minister Patty Hajdu said at a press conference Monday that Canadians expect the government to work with the other parties in Parliament, and suggested the Liberals don\u2019t intend to change their approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been in a minority government situation for a number of years, and the work gets done through collaboration,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes, that collaboration sounds and looks messy. But at the end of the day, that is how the work get done.
