{"id":602823,"date":"2026-04-14T06:02:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T06:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/602823\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T06:02:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T06:02:16","slug":"im-not-going-to-force-you-duolingo-ceo-backs-off-from-evaluating-employees-on-their-ai-usage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/602823\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I\u2019m not going to force you\u2019: Duolingo CEO backs off from evaluating employees on their AI usage\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Using artificial intelligence is becoming a prerequisite for many jobs, but some companies are rethinking its value when it comes to assessing employee performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a year after announcing Duolingo would evaluate AI use in performance reviews, CEO Luis von Ahn said the company has let that metric go.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On April 28, 2025, he <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/duolingo_below-is-an-all-hands-email-from-our-activity-7322560534824865792-l9vh\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/duolingo_below-is-an-all-hands-email-from-our-activity-7322560534824865792-l9vh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that the edtech company would be \u201cAI-first,\u201d and employees would be assessed on their AI use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It has sparked a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/09\/duolingo-ceo-surprised-backlash-ai-first-company-announcement\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/09\/duolingo-ceo-surprised-backlash-ai-first-company-announcement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public backlash<\/a>, and von Ahn told the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6fbafbb6-bafe-484c-9af9-f0ffb589b447?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6fbafbb6-bafe-484c-9af9-f0ffb589b447?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Times<\/a> last year that he \u201cdid not expect the blowback\u201d after longtime Duolingo users commented they were deleting the app.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GDeEATJcbJo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GDeEATJcbJo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Silcon Valley Girl<\/a> podcast last week, he described the feedback from employees, saying some began to ask if Duolingo just wanted them to use AI for AI\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end, we backtracked, and we said, \u2018No. Look, the most important thing in your performance is that you are doing whatever your job is as well as possible. A lot of times AI can help you with that. But if it can\u2019t, I\u2019m not going to force you to do that,\u2019\u201d von Ahn said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like rather than being held accountable for the actual outcome, we\u2019re trying to just push something that in some cases did not fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Von Ahn\u2019s new approach diverges from many companies that are going all in on incentivizing AI employee use. Until recently, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Meta<\/a> had <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/04\/09\/meta-killed-employee-ai-token-dashboard\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/04\/09\/meta-killed-employee-ai-token-dashboard\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a leaderboard<\/a> of the top 250 AI token users companywide, an employee-led effort that allowed workers to see how much AI their colleagues were using.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This month, employees at marketing automation platform Omnisend who are considered outstanding AI users will be awarded a 2% to 4% raise. They will be evaluated on how much time and money their AI use saves; tangible outcomes from their AI workflows; and how widely those workflows are adopted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/04\/09\/ai-backlash-quiet-quitting-fobo-obsolete-white-collar-rebellion\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/04\/09\/ai-backlash-quiet-quitting-fobo-obsolete-white-collar-rebellion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent global survey<\/a> conducted by <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/sap\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/sap\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SAP<\/a> subsidiary WalkMe found that workers are quietly ducking AI use. More than a third of employees surveyed skipped using AI on tasks because it would stop their workflow or cost them more time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to pushback on how employees are using AI, many employees see the technology as a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/04\/08\/gen-z-workers-sabotage-ai-rollout-backlash\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/04\/08\/gen-z-workers-sabotage-ai-rollout-backlash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">direct threat<\/a> to their jobs and livelihoods. Von Ahn\u2019s AI-first declaration last year said the company would replace contractors with AI, which <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/24\/duolingo-ai-first-employees-ceo-luis-von-ahn\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/24\/duolingo-ai-first-employees-ceo-luis-von-ahn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised eyebrows<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since then, von Ahn has clarified that he <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7331386411670982658\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7331386411670982658\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">does not believe<\/a> AI will replace his employees, but he wants to empower his employees to use the technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is it\u2019s not yet the case that AI is better at coding than humans. I think you still really need engineers, and you\u2019re going to need them for a long time,\u201d he said on the podcast last week.<\/p>\n<p>In his experience, AI-written code can be difficult to debug and is not consistently reliable when writing stories for Duolingo, von Ahn added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuolingo has used AI for years to personalize learning and expand access. Technology is core to how we build. We\u2019re always learning\u00a0about\u00a0what works, and we refine our approach as we go. That includes how we think about AI\u2019s role across our teams,\u201d a company spokesperson told Fortune in a statement. \u201cOur teams\u2019 work depends on human judgment, expertise, and creativity. AI tools assist with that work; they don\u2019t make decisions or replace the people building Duolingo.
