{"id":603025,"date":"2026-04-14T08:30:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T08:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/603025\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T08:30:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T08:30:18","slug":"terrebonne-federal-byelection-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/603025\/","title":{"rendered":"Terrebonne federal byelection results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Federal Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste clinched victory in Terrebonne Monday night, winning back the traditional Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois stronghold two months to the day after the Supreme Court cancelled her one-vote victory in last year\u2019s general election.<\/p>\n<p>Her victory this time around, though still narrow, was far more decisive.<\/p>\n<p>With the last of 211 polls reporting just after midnight, Auguste had 22,445 votes, 731 votes ahead of Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9. Conservative Adrienne Charles was third with 1,551 votes, while none of the remaining candidates had more than 250 votes. Turnout in the race was at 50.76 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerrebonne is ready at the decision table,\u201d Auguste told a jubilant crowd of supporters. \u201cI\u2019m ready. Let\u2019s get to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Auguste\u2019s win, alongside two Liberal victories in Toronto byelections, hand Mark Carney\u2019s Liberals a majority government.<\/p>\n<p>The result in Terrebonne caps off a hard-fought campaign that in recent weeks saw both parties\u2019 electoral machines <a href=\"http:\/\/Parties%20campaigned%20hard%20%20Both%20parties&#039;%20electoral%20machines%20have%20in%20recent%20weeks%20descended%20on%20the%20riding%20on%20Montreal&#039;s%20north%20shore,%20where%20hundreds%20of%20volunteers%20%E2%80%94%20including%20Liberal%20cabinet%20ministers%20and%20MPs%20from%20both%20parties%20%E2%80%94%20made%20their%20case%20to%20voters.%20%20While%20the%20Bloc%20fought%20to%20take%20back%20the%20riding,%20the%20federal%20Liberals%20were%20hoping%20to%20add%20an%20extra%20MP%20to%20their%20government,%20which%20in%20recent%20months%20has%20been%20inching%20toward%20majority%20status.%20Since%20November,%20four%20Conservative%20and%20one%20NDP%20MP%20have%20left%20their%20parties%20to%20join%20Mark%20Carney&#039;s%20Liberals.%20%20Coming%20into%20Monday&#039;s%20byelections,%20Carney&#039;s%20government%20was%20just%20one%20MP%20shy%20of%20the%20172%20needed%20to%20form%20a%20majority.%20They%20end%20the%20night%20with%20174%20MPs%20in%20the%20338-seat%20House%20of%20Commons.%20%20One-vote%20win%20annulled%20%20In%20last%20year&#039;s%20general%20election,%20Auguste,%2024,%20unseated%20incumbent%20MP%20Sinclair-Desgagn%C3%A9%20by%20just%20one%20vote,%20winning%20the%20traditional%20Bloc%20stronghold%20by%20just%20one%20vote%20after%20a%20judicial%20recount.%20But%20after%20a%20Bloc%20voter%20reported%20that%20an%20Elections%20Canada%20error%20had%20seen%20her%20ballot%20returned%20to%20her%20instead%20of%20being%20counted,%20Sinclair-Desgagn%C3%A9%20launched%20a%20legal%20challenge%20that%20in%20February%20resulted%20in%20the%20Supreme%20Court%20annulling%20Auguste&#039;s%20victory,%20ending%20her%20brief%20tenure%20in%20Ottawa%20and%20requiring%20a%20repeat%20of%20the%202025%20electoral%20contest.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">descend on the riding<\/a> on Montreal\u2019s north shore.<\/p>\n<p>While the Bloc fought to take back the riding, the federal Liberals were hoping to add an extra MP to their government, which in recent months had teetered toward majority status. Since November, four Conservative MPs and one NDP MP have left their parties to join Carney\u2019s Liberals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really worked the ground\u201d in Terrebonne, Health Minister Marjorie Michel told The Gazette. Evan Buhler \/ Montreal Gazette<\/p>\n<p>Supporters had spent the night huddled in a Terrebonne restaurant, eyes glued to TV screens showing a razor-thin gap between Auguste and Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>The Bloc MP had led in early results, but Auguste pulled ahead around 10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in a bit of a yo-yo,\u201d Michel told an anxious crowd shortly after Auguste took the lead, predicting a long night.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters grew louder as results appeared to cement Auguste\u2019s lead over Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9. \u201cTatiana, Tatiana, Tatiana,\u201d they cheered, dancing, singing and clapping.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/0414-city-terrebonne-7419_302571844.jpg\" alt=\"People cheer holding Quebec flags in a large room.\" class=\"wp-image-100165182\"  \/>Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois supporters cheer as early results are reported in the federal byelection in Terrebonne on Monday, April 13, 2026. Evan Buhler \/ Montreal Gazette<\/p>\n<p>Bloc candidate concedes<\/p>\n<p>Bloc supporters had started the night energetic as they gathered to watch results, with MP Christine Normandin, the party\u2019s House leader, telling The Gazette she was \u201cconfident and optimistic\u201d that Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9 would come out on top.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the evening, Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9\u00a0was conceding the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI congratulate my adversaries and especially the abundance of resources deployed by my adversaries in this campaign,\u201d she said, referencing the ministers and party activists who swung by the riding while in town for <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/on-the-cusp-of-a-majority-mark-carney-stresses-need-for-national-unity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Liberal Party convention in Montreal last week<\/a>. To other Bloc MPs, Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9 said she was \u201cpassing them the torch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will represent Terrebonne the best that they can,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019ll do it well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In last year\u2019s general election, Auguste, 24, had unseated incumbent MP Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9 by just one vote, winning the traditional Bloc stronghold after a judicial recount.<\/p>\n<p>But after a Bloc voter reported that an Elections Canada error had seen her ballot returned to her instead of being counted, Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9 launched a legal challenge that in February resulted in the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/canada\/canadian-politics\/supreme-court-of-canada-annuls-single-vote-win-in-terrebonne-riding-vacating-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">annulling Auguste\u2019s victory<\/a>, ending her brief tenure in Ottawa and requiring a repeat of the 2025 electoral contest.<\/p>\n<p>With the court challenge, \u201cit was a sovereignist who gave a lesson in democracy to the rest of Canada,\u201d Sinclair-Desgagn\u00e9 said in her concession speech.<\/p>\n<p>Coming into Monday\u2019s byelections, Carney\u2019s government was just one MP shy of the 172 needed to form a majority. Chris Young \/ The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p>Easy Liberal wins in Toronto<\/p>\n<p>The Terrebonne byelection was one of three federal byelections taking place Monday, with voters also casting ballots in the Toronto ridings of Scarborough Southwest and University-Rosedale to replace former Liberal MPs Bill Blair and Chrystia Freeland, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Those two ridings were never in real doubt, with news networks calling both of them about an hour after polls closed. Danielle Martin, a doctor and McGill University graduate, won University-Rosedale with 64 per cent of the vote, while Doly Begum won Scarborough Southwest with 70 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Long ballot<\/p>\n<p>The riding was targeted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/canada\/canadian-politics\/with-48-candidates-terrebonne-byelection-will-be-write-in-ballot-elections-canada-says\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/canada\/canadian-politics\/with-48-candidates-terrebonne-byelection-will-be-write-in-ballot-elections-canada-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Longest Ballot Committee<\/a>, which signed up dozens of independent candidates to protest the first-past-the-post electoral system. With the ballot listing a total of 48 candidates, of which 41 are officially independent, voters were given a write-in ballot and asked to write the name of their chosen candidate.<\/p>\n<p>The 41 independents, and Mark Moutter of the Rhinoceros Party, managed only 114 votes total of the 46,369 valid votes cast.<\/p>\n<p>Elections Canada warned that the high number of candidates could delay results for this riding.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/author\/jawilson\/\" class=\"postmedia-author-card__image-link\" rel=\"author image nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Profile picture of Jack Wilson\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/jack-wilson-2-e1774792320471.jpg\" class=\"avatar avatar-96 photo\" height=\"96\" width=\"96\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tI&#8217;ve reported for The Gazette since 2024.
