{"id":603790,"date":"2026-04-14T16:52:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T16:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/603790\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T16:52:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T16:52:07","slug":"capitals-land-2026-first-rounder-for-carlson-leafs-get-a-second-for-laughton-as-conditional-picks-cemented","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/603790\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitals land 2026 first-rounder for Carlson, Leafs get a second for Laughton as conditional picks cemented"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">With the 2026 NHL playoff field now set, several conditional draft picks moved at the trade deadline have been resolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The biggest winners are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/washington-capitals\/15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/washington-capitals\/15\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Capitals<\/a> who have secure the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/anaheim-ducks\/24\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/anaheim-ducks\/24\" target=\"_blank\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a>\u2019 first-round pick in this year\u2019s draft. The pick comes over from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/john-carlson\/8474590\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/john-carlson\/8474590\" target=\"_blank\">John Carlson<\/a> trade in March and was conditional on the Ducks making the playoffs. If Anaheim had missed the postseason, the team would have had the option to keep its 2026 and transfer their pick in 2027 instead. The Capitals, who were eliminated from postseason contention on Monday, also received a 2027 third-round pick in the Carlson deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Carlson has been a key contributor for the Ducks since joining the team, posting four goals and 12 points in 14 games, including a hat trick in a 6-1 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/san-jose-sharks\/28\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/san-jose-sharks\/28\" target=\"_blank\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/toronto-maple-leafs\/10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/toronto-maple-leafs\/10\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> saw the conditional third-round pick the team received from Los Angeles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/scott-laughton\/8476872\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/scott-laughton\/8476872\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Laughton<\/a> trade upgrade to asecondas the Kings clinched a playoff spot on Monday. The Maple Leafs acquired Laughton ahead of the trade deadline in 2025 for a first-round pick and prospect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nikita-grebenkin\/8483733\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nikita-grebenkin\/8483733\" target=\"_blank\">Nikita Grebenkin<\/a>. The 31-year-old centre is off to a strong start in Los Angeles with five goals and eight points in 19 games since the trade after posting eight goals and 12 points in 43 games to start the season with Toronto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Kings could also be forced to send a 2026 second-round pick to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a> if the team wins their first-round playoff series as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/artemi-panarin\/8478550\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/artemi-panarin\/8478550\" target=\"_blank\">Artemi Panarin<\/a> trade in February. The team is currently slated to send a 2026 third-round pick to New York in the deal after already moving prospect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/liam-greentree\/8484802\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/liam-greentree\/8484802\" target=\"_blank\">Liam Greentree<\/a> in the deal and will also send a 2028 fourth-round pick to the Rangers if they advance to the Western Conference final this spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/ottawa-senators\/9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/ottawa-senators\/9\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> received a 2026 fourth-round pick from the Red Wings over the weekend when Detroit was eliminated from postseason contention. The pick was acquired in return for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/david-perron\/8474102\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/david-perron\/8474102\" target=\"_blank\">David Perron<\/a>, with the condition of transferring if the veteran played in at least one game for Detroit. It would have moved to a third-rounder if the Red Wings had reached the second-round of the playoffs with Perron playing in 50 per cent of their first-round games.
