Late-night hosts reacted to the breakdown of peace talks between the US and Iran<\/a> and Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s one-sided beef with Pope Leo XIV.<\/p>\n

Jon Stewart<\/p>\n

Jon Stewart<\/a> returned to the Daily Show on Monday evening to break down the public clashes between Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV, which began when the pope delivered a \u201cbeautiful, compassionate message\u201d for the Easter holiday calling for peace around the world.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIt does not come into my brain that anyone in the world hearing the Pope\u2019s message of peace will have some kind of weird problem with it,\u201d the host noted. Except for Trump, who posted on his social media website Truth Social that the leader of the Catholic church was \u201cweak\u201d and a \u201closer\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am really starting to sour on this president,\u201d Stewart joked. \u201cLook, President Trump, I know the Vatican\u2019s been critical of your policies, but you gotta remember that at the end of the day you and the Catholic church both historically care deeply about the same thing \u2013 covering up sex scandals.\u201d<\/p>\n

The host noted that while Trump\u2019s comments upset many Christians, \u201cplease don\u2019t worry\u201d, as \u201cit gets worse\u201d. He then shared an AI-generated image that Trump posted which depicted him as Jesus Christ himself, healing a sick man while flanked by disciples. That man, Stewart added, happened to look a bit like himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know I don\u2019t have the vigor and spunk of my MTV days, but I didn\u2019t know we were here already,\u201d he quipped. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize my look had reached leper territory. I mean, from the picture, it looks like it was touch-and-go with me for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

The image, unsurprisingly, triggered much backlash even from conservative commentators. But when Trump was asked by a White House reporter about the now-deleted image, he claimed that \u201cit\u2019s supposed to be me as a doctor making people better\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s you as a doctor? Why don\u2019t you own it, you big puss bag?\u201d Stewart retorted. \u201cDo you even care about lying to us any more? Is it over? Has this relationship gone still? Your lies used to have a real spark: \u2018They\u2019re eating the cats and dogs,\u2019 \u2018Venezuela stole the 2020 election.\u2019 And now the best you\u2019ve got is: \u2018Oh, it wasn\u2019t Jesus. I\u2019m a doctor.\u2019 You need to find your happy place, and fast. We expect better lies, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert<\/p>\n

On the Late Show, Stephen Colbert<\/a> opened with news that peace talks in Islamabad between the US and Iran failed, at least according to chief negotiator JD Vance. \u201cBefore he admitted to this failure, JD tried to distract with some odd praise,\u201d the host noted before a clip of Vance addressing the press and deflecting potential criticism with: \u201cwhatever shortcomings of the negotiations, it wasn\u2019t because of the Pakistanis, who did an amazing job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, dude, no one is blaming the Pakistanis,\u201d Colbert laughed. \u201cIt\u2019s like telling your girlfriend \u2018baby, whatever my shortcomings are in the bedroom, let\u2019s not blame my erectile dysfunction on the Pakistanis, who I think we can all agree did an amazing job.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, you might be wondering: where was Trump when this was all going down?\u201d he continued. \u201cWell he was attending to the most important goings on\u201d at a UFC fight in Miami. \u201cOf course, in this case, UFC stands for \u2018U gotta be Fucking Cidding me,\u2019\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n

When Trump received word that talks with Iran had collapsed, he \u201cposted his revenge\u201d on Truth Social: \u201ceffective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWait so we\u2019re blockading Iran\u2019s blockade?\u201d Colbert wondered. \u201cThat\u2019s actually genius. It\u2019s like a plumber saying \u2018you know, some guys would unclog this toilet. But I\u2019m going to play some 12-dimensional chess and double clog it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Later in his monologue, Colbert touched briefly on Trump\u2019s ongoing criticism of the pope, whom he has called a \u201closer\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to one Italian religious historian, not even Hitler or Mussolini attacked the pope so directly and publicly,\u201d Colbert noted, before adding: \u201cIt\u2019s never great when someone says, \u2018You should really be more discreet and respectful. You know, like Hitler.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a fight between the president and the pope. The world has become a real life episode of South Park,\u201d said Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

The host then pulled up the Trump\u2019s AI-generated image that depicted him as Jesus. \u201cThe first problem I see is his hands are normal size. That\u2019s not realistic,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis little detour into messiah status did not get Trump the reaction he was hoping for from the Christian community,\u201d he continued. \u201cOverall, they\u2019re not on board with the whole false idols thing. And a lot of people were upset. So Trump or his team deleted the post, which is notable because his account almost never deletes his crazy posts. Last week, when he threatened to kill a civilization, that\u2019s still up. The Jesus post is down. So you know this one was trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which is perhaps why Trump tried to claim, to a White House reporter, that the image actually depicted him as a doctor trying to heal someone.<\/p>\n
