The German was 4-1, 40-15 down in the second set, but clawed her way back into the match and eventually converted her first match point.

The 24-year-old had stressed beforehand that she feels ‟at home” in Stuttgart – and it was exactly this special atmosphere that helped her to one of her most emotional victories in recent months. In the post-match interview, she said that she had simply tried to find her game without being too expectant and work her way point for point back towards her normal level. ‟Having the spectators in the almost full Porsche Arena believing in me meant a great deal.” All the greater, therefore, was the relief at her first win since the knee injury she sustained in Australia.

Ella Seidel, on the other hand, is out. The German lost her first-round match against Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-4, but still turned in a spirited display against the Belgian world No. 20. ‟Stuttgart is a wonderful tournament,” said the 20-year-old. ‟I was very happy at being able to play on Centre Court. The 30-year-old lost 6-3, 6-1 to Diana Shnaider.

            Ella Seidel

Top stars enter the fray on Wednesday

Wednesday will see four Top 10 players start their campaigns.
