\n\tTom Cruise<\/a> ventured to CinemaCon to offer a deliciously demented first look at \u201cDigger,\u201d his new movie with director Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt took 40 years for me to be able to put on the boots of Digger Rockwell,\u201d Cruise said before introducing the new trailer. <\/p>\n

\n\tAnd this is definitely Cruise as you\u2019ve never seen him before. In the outrageous comedy, he sports a thick Southern accent (think Ross Perot, but more excitable), a beer belly and thinning white hair that\u2019s been manipulated into an unconvincing combover. He\u2019s an oil baron whose company may have set off an ecological disaster that could also spark a nuclear war. John Goodman portrays an ailing U.S. president who implores Cruise\u2019s character to fix the mess he\u2019s unleashed.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf we can\u2019t control the course of nature, all that matters is who has got the balls to win this war,\u201d Cruise\u2019s Digger declares at one point.<\/p>\n

\n\tSandra H\u00fcller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed and Emma D\u2019Arcy round out the cast. But it\u2019s Cruise\u2019s stunning transformation that may get the most attention.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe know that he\u2019s fearless \u2014 the stunts, the planes, the jumps,\u201d I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said on stage during Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners. \u201cBut I have to say, embodying this character is another kind of fearless.\u201d He went on to praise Cruise\u2019s \u201chigh-wire act.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlongside Cruise feeding and stroking his dying cat while walking around his mansion with his gut hanging out, there are shots of planes readying for battle and collapsing polar ice caps. The whole enterprise has a manic intensity that is reminiscent of \u201cDr. Strangelove.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCruise told the crowd of cinema operators in Las Vegas that he\u2019s been a fan of I\u00f1\u00e1rritu since he saw \u201cAmores Perros\u201d in 2000, wearing out his copy of the crime thriller. The two men began discussing a possible collaboration seven years ago while Cruise was filming \u201cTop Gun: Maverick.\u201d The screen legend drove himself to a meeting in the middle of the night on his motorcycle.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s how I get around,\u201d Cruise said. \u201cIt\u2019s much faster, and you don\u2019t have to worry about traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u00f1\u00e1rritu, an Oscar winner for \u201cThe Revenant\u201d and \u201cBirdman,\u201d co-wrote the script with Sabina Berman, Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris. \u201cDigger\u201d marks Cruise\u2019s first non-franchise film since 2017, a year in which he starred in the box office hit \u201cAmerican Made\u201d and notorious flop \u201cThe Mummy.\u201d In the meantime, he\u2019s been busy with three \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d installments as well as \u201cTop Gun: Maverick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDigger\u201d carries a massive $125 million production budget, meaning the film is another wild swing for Warner Bros. co-chiefs Pam Abdy and Mike de Luca, who have placed a big emphasis on expensive, auteur-driven swings.<\/p>\n

\n\tTo that effect, \u201cSinners\u201d was a massive success with $370 million globally against a $90 million budget. And although \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d lost around $90 million to $100 million theatrically, having earned just $210 million against a $140 million budget, it scored a major victory by taking home the best picture Oscar. But, so far, their other gambles lost\u00a0a lot\u00a0of money: February\u2019s \u201cThe Bride\u201d was a catastrophe of epic proportions with $23 million against a $90 million budget, 2025\u2019s sci-fi satire \u201cMickey 17\u201d stumbled with $117 million against a $118 million budget, and 2024\u2019s \u201cJoker: Folie \u00e0 Deux\u201d was rejected with $207 million against a $250 million budget.<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere in 2026, the studio is unveiling \u201cThe End of Oak Street\u201d with Anne Hathaway, \u201cPractical Magic 2\u201d starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, and \u201cThe Great Beyond\u201d from director J.J.
