Image credit: Iwan Baan<\/p>\n<p>Later this week, on April 19th, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/firms\/cover\/96280247\/los-angeles-county-museum-of-art-lacma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles County Museum of Art<\/a>\u00a0will open the new and much-anticipated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/tag\/524084\/lacma-makeover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Geffen Galleries<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The moment will mark the seminal milestone in LACMA&#8217;s long, turbulent journey to expand its campus, which has played out for the entire 21st century.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here is a reminder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/4e\/4ebc527bd2339f45e7eb263b8fb800a1.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028\" class=\"floatbox\" data-size=\"1028x487\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/4ebc527bd2339f45e7eb263b8fb800a1.jpg\"  \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe previous LACMA campus by William Pereira in 1965. Image courtesy of Wikimedia user Gunnar Klack.<\/p>\n<p>The 2000s: False starts<\/p>\n<p>While the current scheme was designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/zumthor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Zumthor<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/skidmoreowingsmerrill\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SOM<\/a> as a collaborating architect, this was not always the case. <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/firms\/cover\/382\/oma-the-office-for-metropolitan-architecture\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OMA<\/a> and Rem Koolhaas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/culture\/la-et-cm-lacma-plans-20130501,0,7229648.story\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won the competition<\/a> for the makeover\u2019s design in 2001, proposing that the main campus buildings be replaced by a collection of low-profile gallery buildings under a translucent, tent-like roof. Two years later, however, fundraising issues would lead to the proposal\u2019s abandonment. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/42\/42d0fe0faeba73d6ebf5c9a75ec0017e.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1456\" class=\"floatbox\" data-size=\"1456x1092\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/42d0fe0faeba73d6ebf5c9a75ec0017e.jpg\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>OMA&#8217;s controversial 2001 LACMA expansion proposal. Image courtesy of OMA.<\/p>\n<p>In the years since OMA\u2019s scheme was abandoned after LACMA failed to raise the roughly $350 million to $400 million needed to realize it, the campus instead expanded incrementally, including through <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/firms\/cover\/341\/renzo-piano-building-workshop\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Renzo Piano\u2019s<\/a> Broad Contemporary Art Museum and Resnick Pavilion. In 2013, however, the institution revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/72295165\/lacma-taps-zumthor-for-650-million-new-look\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Zumthor had been recruited<\/a> to deliver what was then a $650 million plan for a landmark new building. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/c8\/c88e604cd7beb41b032d46ee9074452c.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028\" class=\"floatbox\" data-size=\"1028x685\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/c88e604cd7beb41b032d46ee9074452c.jpg\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/74507137\/peter-zumthor-s-450-000-000-black-flower-for-lacma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June 2013<\/a>: A first look at Zumthor&#8217;s design<a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/55\/55820193d129959f3f3a87886699b6fb.jpeg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028\" class=\"floatbox\" data-size=\"1028x578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/55820193d129959f3f3a87886699b6fb.jpeg\"  \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/102705026\/peter-zumthor-pushes-lacma-redesign-to-the-curb-to-make-room-for-tar-pits\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June 2014<\/a>: Revised design addressing the La Brea Tar Pits.\u00a02013\u20132017: Zumthor\u2019s arrival<\/p>\n<p>In June of 2013, we <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/74507137\/peter-zumthor-s-450-000-000-black-flower-for-lacma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published initial details<\/a> of Zumthor\u2019s proposal, comprising a \u2018Black Flower\u2019 concept which we said at the time \u201cobliterates the original campus.\u201d In 2014, however, the first course correction would take place after Zumthor <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/102705026\/peter-zumthor-pushes-lacma-redesign-to-the-curb-to-make-room-for-tar-pits\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dramatically revised the design<\/a>, addressing concerns that the original scheme would cast a shadow over the nearby La Brea Tar Pits. Initial funding for the project was <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/113033373\/l-a-county-supervisors-approve-initial-funding-for-new-lacma-building\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved later that year<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Throughout the rest of the 2010s, Zumthor\u2019s plan would continue to evolve and morph. In 2015, a design update <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/123660296\/lacma-latest-zumthor-reins-in-his-inkblot-redesign\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed a more angular, muscular scheme<\/a> in contrast to the free-flowing nature of the original scheme, including an array of concrete boxes on the roof. \u201cNo one will call it a blob anymore,\u201d LACMA Director Michael Govan said at the time. \u201cPeter hasn&#8217;t given up the curve. Image credit: Atelier Peter Zumthor2017\u20132019: Design evolutions and critiques<\/p>\n<p>By 2017, Zumthor had overhauled not only the <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/149974240\/peter-zumthor-didn-t-like-his-own-conventional-renderings-for-lacma-and-will-release-new-images\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">visual presentation of the project<\/a> but the tone of the material. No longer a \u2018black flower,\u2019 the galleries would now <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150002328\/peter-zumthor-lends-his-lacma-vision-a-much-lighter-mineral-tone-in-latest-renderings\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adopt a lighter mineral tone<\/a>. Two years later, meanwhile, the overall size of the scheme was <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150128383\/zumthor-s-lacma-makeover-will-be-smaller-than-anticipated-new-renderings-show\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reduced from approximately 390,000<\/a> to less than 350,000 square feet. Image courtesy of LACMA<\/p>\n<p>The reduction in floor space <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150129867\/christopher-knight-tears-the-most-recent-lacma-proposal-a-new-one\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drew the critique<\/a> of LA Times writer Christopher Knight, who wrote: \u201cI couldn\u2019t name another art museum anywhere that has ever raised hundreds of millions of dollars to spend on reducing its collection space.\u201d Nonetheless, in April 2019, the project was <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150131101\/zumthor-s-lacma-has-been-approved-here-s-what-will-be-lost\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved by the LA Board of County Supervisors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the scheme finally appeared to be moving to a construction phase, 2019 saw Archinect <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/features\/article\/150156587\/with-peter-zumthor-s-lacma-in-the-home-stretch-is-los-angeles-entering-its-post-rational-phase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">publish an op-ed<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/drowninginculture\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Southern<\/a> reflecting on what the David Geffen Galleries said about Los Angeles. Reflecting on a recent conversation between LACMA director Michael Govan and <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/uscarchitecture\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USC School of Architecture<\/a> dean Milton Curry, John pondered whether LA had stopped being the city that dares to dream and take architecture to the limits of rationality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/cf\/cf6d3222d87222cda1e6607ab9f9d430.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028\" class=\"floatbox\" data-size=\"1028x535\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cf6d3222d87222cda1e6607ab9f9d430.jpg\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>April 2019: Updated renderings. Image credit: Atelier Peter Zumthor &amp; Partner\/The Boundary2019\u20132021: Demolition amid opposition  <\/p>\n<p>Midway through 2019, a lawsuit was <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150139785\/new-lawsuit-over-a-parking-garage-could-delay-lacma-s-zumthor-redesign\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filed by a local community group<\/a> in LA claiming the LACMA expansion would adversely impact the neighborhood&#8217;s parking capacity. The lawsuit would serve as a prelude to several years of controversy and opposition as the development moved into the construction phase and fundraising efforts for the makeover <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150170467\/lacma-fundraising-effort-stalls-as-museum-turns-into-a-ghost-town\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also encountered problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By late 2019, a non-profit entity named Save LACMA was formed to formalize opposition to the project. In an early move, the entity <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150174928\/save-lacma-group-could-challenge-museum-proposal-at-the-ballot-box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced it was placing a ballot measure<\/a> on the 2020 ballot that sought to challenge the standing of the project and increase public accountability.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/6e\/6eb8fc9174f9c1e25e8331d8dd3f77ca.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028\" class=\"floatbox\" data-size=\"1028x691\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6eb8fc9174f9c1e25e8331d8dd3f77ca.jpg\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150143757\/model-of-future-lacma-campus-now-on-display\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June 2019<\/a>: Model of the proposed scheme. Image credit: Citizens Brigade to Save LACMA (proposal by TheeAe)<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, meanwhile, a separate group named Citizens Brigade for Saving LACMA <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150195217\/six-alternative-proposals-for-lacma-site-are-revealed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published alternative proposals for the site<\/a> elicited through an ideas competition. In addition to bringing more public input to what they claimed was a closed process, the competition also promoted ideas that worked with the existing architectural fabric of the museum rather than demolishing it as per Zumthor\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the controversy and the <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150257280\/lacma-set-to-reopen-amidst-a-year-of-construction-covid-lockdown-and-harsh-criticism\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, demolition of LACMA\u2019s existing William Pereira-designed galleries <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150178661\/demolition-of-william-pereira-designed-buildings-gets-underway-at-lacma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">got underway in 2020<\/a> to make way for Zumthor\u2019s structure. By the end of the year, demolition had <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150212375\/demolition-of-lacma-complex-is-well-underway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all but been completed<\/a>. In consolatory news for those opposed to demolition, it was announced in 2021 that demolished pieces of the museum would be <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150276108\/lacma-s-demolished-buildings-will-live-on-thanks-to-this-los-angeles-artist\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reassembled and installed<\/a> in a new pocket park adjacent to the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood by LA artist Cayetano Ferrer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/5b\/5baed2196badd26e0bb42afd4719d129.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028\" class=\"floatbox\" data-size=\"1028x685\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5baed2196badd26e0bb42afd4719d129.jpg\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150222215\/long-awaited-floor-plan-and-interior-gallery-images-of-peter-zumthor-s-lacma-redesign-emerge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">September 2020<\/a>: Updated interior design emerges. Image credit: Atelier Peter Zumthor &amp; Partner\/The Boundary2021\u20132024: The David Geffen Galleries emerge<\/p>\n<p>In October 2021, we reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150284181\/cranes-have-risen-at-the-site-of-lacma-s-upcoming-david-geffen-galleries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cranes had finally risen<\/a> at the site of the David Geffen Galleries, as construction commenced on what was now a $750 million project. Image credit: LACMA<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2024, Zumthor <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150449604\/peter-zumthor-details-lacma-s-design-inspiration-in-new-interview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offered further remarks<\/a>, noting that the project could install a new sense of courage in Los Angeles, comparing it to the Pan Am Building in New York. &#8220;In about a year, one end will open,&#8221; Zumthor said. \u201dSome curators were critical of the spatial concept of the layout of the museum. But now since they can go and see the space for the first time, they start to like it. Image credit: Iwan Baan<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All in all \u2014 after all this time, money, and Sturm und Drang \u2014 Los Angeles is easily the better for having it,&#8221; Hawthorne concluded. &#8220;It has been a punishing road for [LACMA director] Govan and Zumthor to get here.
