A salmonella outbreak linked to a pub in Stoney Creek has sickened nine people, Hamilton Public Health says.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, the local health agency said it was investigating the outbreak at Piper Arms Stoney Creek at 1786 Stone Church Rd. E.<\/p>\n
Of the nine confirmed cases, seven have been hospitalized, Hamilton Public Health says.<\/p>\n
The cases developed symptoms between March 30 and April 5. Hamilton Public Health says symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and chills.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe investigation remains ongoing, and no specific food item has been confirmed as the source of illness,\u201d city health officials said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
While inspection of the premises was completed on Saturday and Monday, Hamilton Public Health still ordered the temporary closure of the pub on Monday for the ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n
\u201cPublic Health has worked closely with the operator to review food handling and sanitation practices and has collected food samples for laboratory testing,\u201d city officials said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this time, no specific deficiencies requiring corrective action have been identified; however, the closure allows Public Health to complete the investigation and ensure the premises is operating safely before reopening.\u201d<\/p>\n
Health officials urge patrons who are currently not experiencing symptoms to monitor themselves and practice good hygiene.<\/p>\n
Salmonella is a type of bacteria typically found in raw or undercooked foods and unpasteurized products can also spread through contaminated produce or improper food handling, health officials said.<\/p>\n
