OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei are speaking out in a new documentary about the impacts of artificial intelligence on parenthood<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m not scared for kids to grow up in a world with AI,” Altman says in The AI Doc<\/p>\n
Amodei counters: “There’s so much uncertainty. I would almost just do what you’re going to do anyway”<\/p>\n
A new documentary about artificial intelligence<\/a> sees major figures in the industry weighing in on whether or not the increasingly pervasive and popular \u2014 if controversial \u2014 technology should affect plans to have children.<\/p>\n In The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist<\/a>, in theaters now, filmmakers Daniel Roher and Charlie Tyrell pose the question (with Rother preparing to become a father himself) as the film explores what is at stake if humanity gets AI “wrong.”<\/p>\n He asks Tristan Harris, a former Google employee and co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology<\/a> who speaks out regularly about the need for limitations on technology, if the public is \u201cdoomed.\u201d<\/p>\n In response, Harris says, \u201cIt’s not good news, the world that we’re heading into.\u201d<\/p>\n He insists, \u201cI know people who work on AI risk who don’t expect their children to make it to high school.\u201d<\/p>\n OpenAI CEO Sam Altman<\/a> \u2014 no stranger to his own apocalyptic warnings about the technology that has made him famous and fabulously wealthy \u2014 offers a different view in the film. He had a son last year.<\/p>\n He says that having a child is a \u201cmomentous thing\u201d and that he stays \u201cup every night\u201d reading books about \u201chow to raise a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI hope I’m going to do a good job,\u201d the 40-year-old billionaire continues. \u201cBut I\u2019m not scared for kids to grow up in a world with AI.\u201d<\/p>\n Last May, Altman told Bloomberg\u2019s Emily Chang<\/a> that he felt a \u201cneurochemical change\u201d<\/a> months after the birth of his son and shared that he thinks he will \u201cmake better decisions\u201d regarding OpenAI and its signature product, ChatGPT, when it comes to \u201chumanity as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, Altman boasts in The AI Doc that he believes \u201cour kids will never be smarter than an AI” from a “raw IQ perspective.”<\/p>\n Never miss a story \u2014 sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter<\/a> to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer\u200b\u200b, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.<\/p>\n Dario Amodei, the CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, which makes another popular AI program, Claude, also appears in The AI Doc.<\/p>\n When asked by Roher if the \u201cprivate discussions\u201d with other AI industry leaders \u201cwhose fingers are on the trigger\u201d fill him with “confidence” or anxiety, Amodei says it’s nuanced.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know, all I can do is push for the government to get involved. But ultimately, I\u2019m just one person there, too,” he says. “It\u2019s up to all of us to push for the government to get involved. That\u2019s the No. 1 thing that I think we need to do to set things in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n More broadly, data shows that more and more Americans are using AI even as most of them feel they can’t reliably trust the technology, according to a March Quinnipiac University poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n An Ipsos poll<\/a> that same month found that 63% of Americans support the federal government ensuring \u201cAI outputs don\u2019t cause harm,\u201d though concerns over \u201cthe social and environmental impacts of tech\u201d depend on political ideology.<\/p>\n In The AI Doc, when asked about his thoughts on parenthood, Amodei, who used to work at OpenAI and appears to have an icy relationship with Altman<\/a>, was ambivalent.<\/p>\n “There’s so much uncertainty. I would almost just do what you’re going to do anyway,” he says. “I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but it’s the only one I can come up with.”<\/p>\n The AI Doc is in theaters now.<\/p>\n
