(Photo by Daron Letts)<\/p>\n<p>More than three dozen teens from across Nunavut put their know-how to the test Saturday and Sunday at the Skills Canada Nunavut Territorial Skills Competition, held in Iqaluit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the kids who come here have a blast,\u201d Brandon Villeneuve, executive director of Skills Canada Nunavut, said in an interview Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>By Sunday afternoon, the students\u2019 smiles had turned to expressions of determination and concentration as they got to work.<\/p>\n<p>In all, 37 Nunavut teens ages 13 through 19 participated across 13 trades.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the competitions were held at \u00c9cole des Trois-Soleils, the French-language school, while the bakers competed in the teaching kitchen at nearby Aqsarniit Ilinniarvik School.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260320-ncc\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/260320.100.95.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBaking was really popular,\u201d Villeneuve said.<\/p>\n<p>Six teens competed in the kitchen this year, with Sophea Haulli of Igloolik earning baking gold.<\/p>\n<p>In the carpentry competition, Ian Dialla of Pangnirtung built a doghouse to win a gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>Although he excelled in the trade, Dialla said he aspires to become a pilot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to learn something new and try something new,\u201d he said of his choice to compete.<\/p>\n<p>Emmalie Alivaktuk, also of Pangnirtung, zeroed in on her longtime goal of becoming a hairstylist. She practised perms, updos, cuts and hair colouring, under the guidance of Iqaluit instructor Amy Spracklin.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260403-april-promo-sidebar\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Spring-Sale_orange_sidebar-1.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince I was young, I\u2019ve been interested in doing hair,\u201d Alivaktuk said. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting because I\u2019m finally learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-259964\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-259964\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_4263-400x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-259964\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emmalie Alivaktuk of Pangnirtung watches hairstyling instructor Amy Spracklin demonstrate a technique during the Skills Canada Nunavut Territorial Skills Competition in Iqaluit on Sunday. (Photo by Daron Letts)<\/p>\n<p>Igloolik students Diane Kunnuk and Seporah Satuqsi teamed up to create a digital animation, earning them gold medals with support from retired television animator and educator Greg Brown of Iqaluit, who acted as a judge in the animation category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got a couple of really talented kids, so we\u2019ve been able to hit the ground running,\u201d Brown said, as he stepped back to watch the students work independently on their project midday Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Other categories teens competed in included small engine maintenance, beading, parka-making, public speaking, photography, videography, cooking, and workplace safety.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/2026-krg-annual\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/260227_nunavikparks_annual.jpg\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No students competed in electrical or plumbing this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt happens,\u201d Villeneuve said. \u201cWe\u2019ll be going to more places and starting involvement earlier and seeing if we can get kids interested in those areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Except for the beading and parka-making categories, which were for Nunavut only, other winners will be eligible to compete at the Skills Canada national competition at Toronto\u2019s Enercare Centre on May 28 and 29.<\/p>\n<p>Skills Canada Nunavut staff and local educators will speak to the gold medalists to discuss the opportunity in coming weeks, Villeneuve said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They baked.
