April 14 (Reuters) – Meta (META<\/a>) will work with chip designer Broadcom (AVGO<\/a>) to produce several generations of custom artificial intelligence<\/a> processors under an expanded deal \u200cas the social media giant races to build out the computing \u200ccapacity needed to power AI features across its apps.<\/p>\n

Tuesday’s announcement extends the tie-up until 2029 and \u200bincludes an initial commitment of over one gigawatt of computing<\/a> capacity, enough to power roughly 750,000 U.S. homes on average.<\/p>\n

As part of the deal, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan would leave Meta’s board and move to an advisory role on its custom chip \u200cstrategy, the companies said \u2060in a joint statement.<\/p>\n

As AI drives a surge in computing demand, big technology companies such as Meta, Google and Amazon are \u2060designing their own chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia<\/a>‘s costly processors.<\/p>\n

That custom chip boom has made Broadcom one of the biggest winners of generative AI. The company works \u200bwith clients \u200bto develop custom processors and supplies infrastructure \u200bsoftware.<\/p>\n

Its shares were up 3.5% \u200cin extended trading, while those of Meta were little changed.<\/p>\n

The tie-up helps “build out the massive computing foundation we need to deliver personal superintelligence to billions of people,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.<\/p>\n

The company, which last month unveiled a roadmap of four new chips, said the initial capacity commitment with Broadcom was “the first phase \u200cof a sustained, multi-gigawatt rollout.”<\/p>\n

Broadcom’s Ethernet networking technology \u200bwill also be used to connect Meta’s rapidly \u200bgrowing clusters of AI computers.<\/p>\n

The \u200bfirst chip from Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) program, called \u200cthe MTIA 300, already powers Meta’s ranking \u200band recommendation systems, \u200bwith three more due through 2027. The later generations are designed for inference, the process by which AI models respond to user queries.<\/p>\n

Separately, Meta \u200bsaid on Tuesday Tracey Travis, \u200cwho has been on its board since 2020, would not stand \u200bfor re-election at the company’s annual shareholder meeting.<\/p>\n
