highly popular channel 8-bit Music Theory<\/a>,\u00a0says that part of the challenge and the joy of music from its early days is the limitations in its software. \u201cAll these soundtracks were composed on sound hardware that was super limited,\u201d he explains, adding that the\u00a0original Nintendo Entertainment System could only produce three pitches at the same time\u00a0because of the amount of memory available.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe composers of the day had to rely on melodies, on making super-strong melodies because they just didn\u2019t have that much else to work with,\u201d Kidd says, \u201cand so, this music is melodic and thematic and grabs you and the best of it is really, really phenomenal writing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
For the 8-Bit Big Band concert, Kidd has taken those limited melodies and blown them up to accommodate the full\u00a0complement\u00a0of the\u00a0Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0like, \u2018Well, what else can we do now? How can we unleash this tune?\u2019\u201d Kidd smiles. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0been\u00a0a very fun\u00a0process working towards that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the contrast\u00a0in limitations, Kidd says that jazz music and vintage video game soundtracks\u00a0blend\u00a0quite well, going so far as to say that the music of vintage video games could be a genesis point for the next wave of jazz composition.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think about the history of jazz and early jazz music,\u201d he says, \u201c… and through till today, jazz musicians mostly play jazz standards which were written as show tunes in the \u201820s, \u201830s and \u201840s. Nowadays, jazz musicians still play that same group of tunes… but nobody my age\u00a0knows them as pop tunes.\u201c\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, video game music is set up to replace\u00a0those standards or exist alongside those standards as the sort of modern music that people can latch onto,\u201d he elaborates. \u201cIt gives people something to hold onto and say, \u2018I know this theme!\u2019,\u00a0but it is instrumental music and it does provide a\u00a0really\u00a0kind of perfect\u00a0vehicle for jazz exploration.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
