PARIS (AP) \u2014 The rapper formerly known as Kanye West<\/a> postponed his upcoming show in the city of Marseille after French authorities said they would seek to ban the concert.<\/p>\n

The decision by Ye came a week after he was banned from entering the U.K.<\/a>, where he was scheduled to headline the Wireless Festival<\/a> in July, following a backlash over the artist\u2019s history of antisemitic remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter much thought and consideration, it is my sole decision to postpone my show in Marseille, France until further notice,\u201d Ye wrote Wednesday on the social network X. \u201cI know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my commitment to make amends.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rapper, who changed his name in 2021, had been expected to play at Marseille\u2019s Stade V\u00e9lodrome on June 11.<\/p>\n

French Interior minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez had pledged to explore \u201call possibilities\u201d to make sure the show would not go on as planned, according to his office. <\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Marseille Mayor Beno\u00eet Payan opposed the rapper\u2019s visit to one of France\u2019s most multicultural cities, which has a history of immigration stretching back centuries. <\/p>\n

\u201cI refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unabashed Nazism,\u201d Payan said. \u201cKanye West is not welcome at the V\u00e9lodrome, our temple of community and home to all Marseillais.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ye has drawn widespread condemnation<\/a> for making antisemitic remarks and voicing admiration for Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n

Ye released a song called \u201cHeil Hitler\u201d and advertised a swastika T-shirt for sale on his website last year. Officials in Australia canceled the musician\u2019s visa in July after the release of the single.<\/p>\n

The 48-year-old apologized in January with a letter published as a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal. He said his bipolar disorder led him to fall into \u201ca four-month long, manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behavior that destroyed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ye said in his latest message on X, \u201cI take full responsibility for what\u2019s mine but I don\u2019t want to put my fans in the middle of it. My fans are everything to me. Looking forward to the next shows.
