A consumer spending tracker<\/a> conducted by RBC<\/a> found that Canadian spending on gasoline rose 9.1 per cent in March, as the conflict in the Middle East continues to drive oil prices higher.<\/p>\n

\u201cA sharp increase in gasoline prices, tied to geopolitical tensions, boosted spending at fuel stations, and contributed to strength in essentials\u2019 purchases,\u201d the tracker states.<\/p>\n

Aside from purchasing gasoline, overall spending still rose in March, with \u201cservice categories remain[ing] the primary source of non-gasoline related growth with entertainment and arts leading gains.\u201d<\/p>\n

RBC says that growth shows how consumers are \u201creinforcing the ongoing shift toward experience-related spending.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spending on groceries and household and construction fell 0.8 per cent from March, along with dining by 0.6 per cent.<\/p>\n

However, spending on travelling increased 0.9 per cent from March, and clothing, shoes and related apparel rose 0.7 per cent.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> announced\u00a0a temporary suspension<\/a> of the federal fuel excise tax starting next Monday until Labour Day.<\/p>\n

Patrick De Haan, a petroleum analyst at GasBuddy, said Canadians can expect to see a notable change in prices \u201cpretty quickly\u201d from that, with an \u201caverage savings about $4 to $8 on a gasoline fill-up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be savings for consumers all summer long,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Canadian Automobile Association currently lists national Canadian gas prices<\/a> as 174.9 cents a litre, a slight rise from 173.2 cents a litre listed Tuesday.<\/p>\n
