{"id":606802,"date":"2026-04-15T23:59:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T23:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/606802\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T23:59:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T23:59:12","slug":"plaza-with-history-of-problems-makes-deal-with-city-to-improve-mississauga-location","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/606802\/","title":{"rendered":"Plaza with history of problems makes deal with city to improve Mississauga location"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beefed-up security is at the core of a new agreement that\u2019s expected to settle a years-long dispute between the city and a large plaza in Mississauga\u2019s west end that\u2019s become widely known for \u201cdangerous nuisance gatherings,\u201d excessive noise, parking concerns and other issues.<\/p>\n<p>City of Mississauga officials said Wednesday afternoon the just-announced pact includes new measures that seek to \u201cimprove safety, support businesses and maintain a welcoming environment\u201d at Ridgeway Plaza, located at Eglinton Avenue West and Ridgeway Drive in west Erin Mills.<\/p>\n<p>The new measures are to be implemented immediately, the city said in a news release, noting \u201cseveral actions (are) expected to be in place by May.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/troublesome-plaza-hot-topic-in-mississauga-city-considers-another-public-meeting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plaza has become known since opening in 2022<\/a> for \u201cdangerous nuisance gatherings,\u201d excessive noise, street racing, parking concerns and other issues, city officials said earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Ridgeway Plaza (it\u2019s actually two plazas \u2014 Erin Mills Centre and Platinum Centre) has been the subject of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/112-complaints-launched-against-mississaugas-ridgeway-plaza-since-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">112 public complaints since 2022, <\/a>and the city had been looking at options to solve various issues at the location.<\/p>\n<p>Known as a foodie destination, the plaza currently numbers 115 restaurants, according to a report presented earlier this year to the city\u2019s planning and development committee.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-749824\" class=\"wp-image-749824 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Missy-map-Ridgeway-Plaza-general-area-aug-13-2025.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1159\" height=\"667\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-749824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image shows location of Ridgeway Plaza (centre) and surrounding area.<\/p>\n<p>City officials said Wednesday the deal with Ridgeway Plaza Condominium Corporations, which manages the plaza, comes after a recent mediation process and establishes a \u201cformal compliance and security framework to reduce nuisance gatherings at Ridgeway Plaza and help maintain a safe, welcoming space for residents, visitors and local businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To ensure compliance with city safety standards, Mississauga officials say the Ridgeway condominium corporations will \u201cindependently fund and implement the following site improvements\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>Installation of security cameras, speed bumps and permanent access gates.<br \/>\nAdditional \u201cNo Parking,\u201d \u201cNo Trespassing\u201d and \u201cVideo Surveillance\u201d signs.<br \/>\nIncreased security staffing on evenings when large celebrations are expected.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Mississauga, meanwhile, will provide enhanced enforcement of parking regulations moving forward, officials said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">City and plaza will meet four times a year<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the city and\u00a0Ridgeway Plaza Condominium Corporations will meet four times a year to \u201cmonitor progress and make adjustments as needed,\u201d the city added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRidgeway Plaza is an important and valued part of our community and we appreciate the collaborative approach taken by the condominium boards to reach this agreement,\u201d Mississauga Deputy Mayor and Ward 8 Coun. Matt Mahoney said. \u201cSafety has always been our top priority and we\u2019re confident these steps will help address the concerns raised by the community and keep plaza patrons safe while supporting the plaza\u2019s diverse businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The condominium corporations that manage the plaza said in Wednesday\u2019s news release they\u2019re committed to ensuring \u201ca safe, viable environment for our commercial tenants and their patrons. By making these necessary, privately-funded investments in security infrastructure, we are ensuring continued compliance with city bylaws and protecting the long-term value of Ridgeway Plaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city added the new measures at the plaza follow lengthy discussions between the two sides \u201cto identify ways to improve safety and prevent nuisance gatherings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few years, city officials noted, \u201csuch gatherings have violated the city\u2019s Nuisance Gathering Bylaw and interfered with road safety, traffic flow, emergency response and bylaw enforcement in and around the plaza.
