{"id":608371,"date":"2026-04-16T16:53:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T16:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/608371\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:53:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T16:53:10","slug":"a-vital-system-of-atlantic-ocean-currents-is-weakening-and-closer-to-collapse-than-thought-new-studies-find","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/608371\/","title":{"rendered":"A vital system of Atlantic Ocean currents is weakening and closer to collapse than thought, new studies find"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1fgbbt000x26nnez189s7m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/15\/climate\/iceland-warming-current-amoc-collapse-threat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">critical system of ocean currents<\/a> which loops around the Atlantic Ocean is weakening and could be far closer to collapse than previously thought, according to two new studies \u2014 an event which would have catastrophic impacts on the planet\u2019s weather and climate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy500083b6q4g22gm8v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, known as the AMOC, functions like a vast conveyor belt, transporting heat, salt and freshwater through the ocean and influencing climate, weather and sea levels around the planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy500093b6q9517n403@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/25\/world\/gulf-stream-atlantic-current-collapse-climate-scn-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing body<\/a> of research suggests it\u2019s weakening as human-driven global warming disrupts its delicate balance of heat and salinity, with one study even predicting it could collapse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/02\/climate\/atlantic-circulation-collapse-timing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as soon as next decade<\/a>. But the AMOC is complex and has only been continuously monitored since 2004. Climate models generally agree it\u2019s on course to weaken this century, but there is a huge amount of uncertainty about the extent of its decline.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1k9v4t00093b6q17jqdbgs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The stakes are incredibly high; an AMOC collapse, which last happened roughly 12,000 years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/11\/climate\/ocean-currents-amoc-collapse-extreme-cold\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">would cause chaos<\/a>. It would push Europe into a winter deep freeze, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/16\/climate\/ocean-currents-sea-level-rise-northeast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accelerate sea level rise<\/a> along the East Coast of the US and drive prolonged droughts across a swath of Africa.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000c3b6q8wnr9n4y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The two new studies \u2014 one which focuses on the AMOC\u2019s future, the other on its present \u2014 provide new and alarming evidence of its decline.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1l6rq100043b6rtfzi7ur3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The findings are \u201cimportant and concerning,\u201d said Stefan Rahmstorf, an oceanographer at Potsdam University who has studied the AMOC for decades and was not involved in either report.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2232105035.jpg\" alt=\"People load water containers onto an animal in a drought-affected area of Kenya in August 2025. The collapse of the AMOC would bring catastrophic impacts including prolonged droughts across a swath of Africa.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000d3b6qwyfu8i09@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adx4298#sec-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a>, published Thursday in the journal Science Advances, scientists combined climate models with real world data, including ocean temperature and salinity, to map out the AMOC\u2019s future over the next several decades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1k0syj00043b6qpmoqc5gs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They found most climate models underestimate its decline. The AMOC is on course to slow by more than 50% by the end of the century, a \u201csubstantial weakening\u201d that\u2019s 60% stronger than that estimated by the average of all climate models, according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000g3b6qd3eu4wbw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The findings show \u201cpessimistic\u201d climate models, those which show a strong weakening of the AMOC, \u201care unfortunately the realistic ones,\u201d Rahmstorf said. It heightens fears that it could pass a tipping point as early as the middle of this century, he added, the point at which shutdown \u201cbasically cannot be stopped anymore.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000h3b6qf1062p1e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alarmingly, the AMOC\u2019s weakening could even be more pronounced than the study found because meltwater from Greenland is not included in the climate models, Rahmstorf said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000i3b6q5f3mfgje@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Thursday\u2019s study follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adz7738#sec-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> published last week by scientists from the University of Miami, who looked at what is currently happening to the AMOC.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000j3b6q4xt91rsn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They analyzed real world data from four moorings along the western boundary of the North Atlantic Ocean, which have measured water temperature, salinity and the velocity of ocean currents since 2004. They found the AMOC has been weakening at four different latitudes over the past two decades.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2268844926.jpg\" alt=\"Disko Bay, Greenland, on March 15, 2026. Melting ice is disrupting the balance of salinity that drives the AMOC.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000k3b6qxik2j4a0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fact that weakening was observed at all four locations is significant, said Shane Elipot, a physical oceanographer at the University of Miami and a report author. Although the results only focus on the western boundary of the Atlantic Ocean, this region is \u201cthe canary in a coal mine\u201d for what\u2019s happening to the AMOC, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000l3b6qdbl0ftsj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The real-world data helps validate predictions made by climate models, Elipot added. \u201cThe worrying part is that the same models are predicting that the AMOC is likely going towards a tipping point where it eventually shuts down,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000m3b6q06qra1ln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study provides \u201cstrong observational evidence that the present-day AMOC is indeed declining,\u201d said Ren\u00e9 van Westen, a marine and atmospheric researcher at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, who was not involved in the research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1jhyy5000n3b6q3eg9h9te@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The results of both studies are very worrying, he said.
