Winnipeg is among the first cities that will be impacted as Canada Post begins a major delivery overhaul.<\/p>\n
The Crown corporation announced Thursday it has reached a turning point and it is taking action to ensure it can meet the evolving needs of Canadians in a financially sustainable way, including converting the remaining addresses that receive door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes and modernizing the retail network.<\/p>\n
The conversion, which affects around four million addresses nationwide, will take around five years to complete with different areas moving to community mailboxes each year.<\/p>\n
Winnipeg rollout part of national shift<\/p>\n
Currently, around three out of every four Canadian addresses already receive their mail and parcels through some form of centralized delivery. The first phase, which will take place late 2026 into early 2027, will affect approximately\u00a0136,000 addresses across Canada, including approximately 16,000 across Winnipeg neighbourhoods. “Canada Post\u2019s transformation will strengthen the postal service, allow it to be a better partner for businesses, enable national commerce, and help it meet its dual mandate of delivering for all Canadians without being a recurring burden on taxpayers,” said the Crown corporation in a press release<\/a>. “It\u2019s therefore important the Corporation move forward in a timely manner while working closely with its bargaining agents and the Government of Canada.”<\/p>\n The first round of changes will also affect addresses in Moncton and Riverview, N.B.,\u00a0Sept-\u00celes, Que.,\u00a0La Prairie and Candiac, Que.,\u00a0Ottawa, Ont.,\u00a0Abbotsford, B.C.,\u00a0Mission, B.C. and the City of North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver and West Vancouver, B.C.<\/p>\n Canada Post says the selected Winnipeg areas are largely adjacent to neighbourhoods already using community mailboxes, which should ease the logistical challenges of installation and adoption.<\/p>\n Related Stories:<\/p>\n What it means for residents<\/p>\n Community mailboxes, already familiar to many Manitobans, offer locked compartments for letters and dedicated sections for parcels. The postal service says more than 80 per cent of packages can be delivered directly to these compartments, while oversized or signature-required items will still be delivered to the door or held at nearby post offices.<\/p>\n “We\u2019re committed to moving forward in a thoughtful way that prioritizes service for all Canadians, while protecting access to vital postal services in rural, remote and Indigenous communities,” said Canada Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n
