The theft of thousands of dollars in relief supplies that were bound to Jamaica has led to charges for a man from Brampton.<\/p>\n
The theft happened on Dec. 3 shortly after 5 p.m. at a secure storage facility near Derry Road East and Goreway Drive in Mississauga, Peel Regional Police say.<\/p>\n
A trailer on the property was loaded with relief like clothing and non-perishables and was supposed to be shipped to Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.<\/p>\n
But the supplies were stolen with the help of a transport truck, investigators say.<\/p>\n
A months-long investigation led to the arrest of a Brampton man in March, and the recovery of more than $1 million of stolen property, police say.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe recovered property was returned to its rightful owner and shipped to Kingston, Jamaica, where it was to be dispersed for hurricane relief,\u201d Peel police said in a release.<\/p>\n
Peel police say Varinder Dhillon, 40, of Brampton break and enter and commit an indictable offence, two counts each of theft over $5,000 and operation while prohibited, three counts each of breach of probation order and possession of property obtained by crime, and fail to comply with release order.<\/p>\n
Investigators say the accused is currently on probation for similar offences and has been prohibited from driving \u201cindefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n
