Freezing rain began falling in Winnipeg in the early morning hours and is expected to continue through the morning before transitioning to snow.\u00a0The snow is expected to continue into the afternoon before the system rolls out of the province.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Environment Canada warns that roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery, creating hazardous conditions for both drivers and pedestrians. Forecasters say the system could have a significant impact on rush hour traffic.<\/p>\n
“It appears that the Westman, Riding Mountain area got the most snow,” says James Colangelo, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (EC). “The area saw about five to 10 centimetres of snow [overnight].”<\/p>\n
The snow is expected to continue into the afternoon before rolling out of the province.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The snow band has pushed off to the east, central portion of Manitoba today. There will be more snow in the Grand Rapids, Norway House, and Island Lake area. They’ll see another five to 10 centimetres today.”<\/p>\n
Manitobans are being urged to monitor the latest alerts and forecasts and to use caution if travelling.<\/p>\n
“As for the southern portion in the Winnipeg area, we’ve seen a sharp band of precipitation that made its way through the area, from Altona through northeast to Winnipeg. What we’re seeing with that is freezing rain, but that has mostly changed over to ice pellets and snow.”<\/p>\n
According to Colangelo, we could see up to two centimetres of snow by the end of Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
