Jerry Pate Design has overseen a restoration of the Pete Dye layout in the Dominican Republic, rebuilding course features to withstand the impact of the harsh coastal climate.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal was to improve and polish the course without changing it,\u201d says Pate. \u201cOur aim was one of architectural preservation, to modernise the course, but to keep it familiar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>In the main feature of this issue, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfcoursearchitecture.net\/digital\/magazine\/issue84\/42\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Doing it tough\u2019<\/a>, we speak with architects about the most difficult sites of their careers. Designers Steve Smyers, Neil Crafter, Jason Straka and Adrian Stiff share their experiences of creating golf courses on challenging sites. Sam Thomas of GEO Foundation says: \u201cThose awkward disrupted sites we have worked with over the past 10 years have seen transformations in real biodiversity jumps, reconnected habitat networks and renewed green-blue infrastructure networks that \u2013 alongside good golf \u2013 have breathed life back into the land and, in some instances, the communities of the places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Adam Lawrence reports on a trip to South Carolina to see Brandon Johnson\u2019s work on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfcoursearchitecture.net\/digital\/magazine\/issue84\/58\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">King\u2019s North course at Myrtle Beach National (MBN)<\/a>, one of the earliest Arnold Palmer designs.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKing\u2019s North is now by a long way the best of the three courses at MBN,\u201d writes Adam. \u201cIt cannot have been an easy project for Johnson; though the ground is sandy, it is mostly extremely flat, and there are plenty of spots around the course where moving water was not easy, given the lack of topography.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Brandon Johnson has overseen a renovation of the King\u2019s North course at Myrtle Beach National in South Carolina (Photo: Founders Group International)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6029April26-2_web.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"image_title\" style=\"width: 950px;\">Brandon Johnson has overseen a renovation of the King\u2019s North course at Myrtle Beach National in South Carolina (Photo: Founders Group International)<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Adam also spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfcoursearchitecture.net\/digital\/magazine\/issue84\/50\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jan Bel Jan<\/a>, one of the few female golf course architects in the industry, for our feature interview. Jan describes how her interest in golf was piqued by the enthusiasm her dad and uncles had for the game, how Tom Fazio gave her a start in golf course design, the courses that were pivotal in her career, and a desire to see more women in golf course architecture. \u201cI want to mentor other women in the industry \u2013 I want them to believe they can be golf architects, but understand how much work it is,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>We have contributions from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfcoursearchitecture.net\/digital\/magazine\/issue84\/33\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rogelio Abarca<\/a> of Greg Norman Golf Course Design, who talks about the firm\u2019s least-disturbance approach to design projects in Mexico; and Hunter\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfcoursearchitecture.net\/digital\/magazine\/issue84\/39\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carl Eberts<\/a>, who discusses how Centro Nacional de Golf in Madrid, Spain, revamped its golf course irrigation to meet a sustainability target.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>We also report on the Fry\/Straka-designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfcoursearchitecture.net\/digital\/magazine\/issue84\/72\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Plover Cove<\/a> course that is being built in Hong Kong; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfcoursearchitecture.net\/digital\/magazine\/issue84\/81\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WinStar World<\/a> in Oklahoma, which is set to reopen following a $22 million renovation; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfcoursearchitecture.net\/digital\/magazine\/issue84\/76\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dhoho Golf Club<\/a>, Brian Curley\u2019s new layout in the East Java region of Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Curley says: \u201cI feel we got a lot out of a tough site with a relatively modest earthmoving effort given the terrain.
