{"id":610349,"date":"2026-04-17T14:23:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T14:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/610349\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T14:23:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T14:23:13","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/610349\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets turned higher ahead of a crucial weekend that could pave the way for a near-term resolution to the Middle East war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">U.S. President Donald Trump expressed confidence that an agreement \u2060could soon \u200bbe reached to end the conflict and urged the Tehran-aligned Hezbollah group to hold its fire as a 10-day truce went into effect between Lebanon and Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Trump said the next meeting between U.S. and Iranian negotiators could take place at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were in positive territory after slight gains on major U.S. markets yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures edged higher after Canada\u2019s main stock market closed modestly down yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Fifth Third Bancorp, State Street Corp. and Truist Financial Corp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI think equity markets are remaining positive and some solid U.S. earnings have helped, but &#8211; and it\u2019s a big but &#8211; we need to see some concrete evidence that peace is going to last,\u201d said Nick Twidale, chief market strategist at ATFX Global.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/article-wall-streets-week-ahead-surging-record-high-us-stocks-to-wade-deeper\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street\u2019s week ahead: Surging record-high U.S. stocks to wade deeper into earnings season<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.29 per cent. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 rose 0.4 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX advanced 0.91 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 gained 0.69 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 1.75 per cent lower, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng slid 0.89 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices plunged after Iran\u2019s foreign minister said that the passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-us-war-ceasefire-lebanon-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-iran-us-war-ceasefire-lebanon-israel\/\">was open<\/a> for the remaining ceasefire period, in line with that in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures declined 10.6 per cent to US$87.87 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 12 per cent to US$83.13 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cOil prices are reacting very sensitively to escalation or de-escalation headlines,\u201d said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold was up 1.2 per cent to US$4,846.28 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for June rose 1.2 per cent to US$4,863.80.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 72.93 US cents to 73.20 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 0.46 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, dropped 0.38 per cent to 97.83. The U.S. dollar traded at $1.3664. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro rose 0.41 per cent to US$1.1832.
