If the recent dump of snow has melted by the end of the weekend, the City of Calgary is planning to launch its annual street sweeping program starting on Monday.

The city’s annual spring cleanup program will run from April 20 until the end of June, with sweepers out in full force on residential roads from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except on statutory holidays.

“After the winter months, spring cleanup is an opportunity for a refresh,” said Chris Hewitt, manager of mobility maintenance, in a city news release. “This program keeps our neighbourhoods safe and clean for everyone, and reduces the debris that enters our waterways through the stormwater system.”

Calgarians can find their neighbourhood’s scheduled sweeping dates at calgary.ca/sweep, which includes an address lookup tool. Households can also contact 311 or sign up for notification reminders via email or text message from the city to learn when the sweepers will be passing through their community.

Hewitt said temporary on-street parking bans will be in effect when the sweepers are in force. If vehicles must be kept home, motorists are encouraged to park in driveways, parking pads, or in back alleys until the sweeping is completed in their neighbourhood.

“We thank you for removing vehicles off the street during the parking ban to help us complete this important work,” he said. “It’s also a good time to remind property owners that if you have front collection on sweeping day, you should place your black, green and blue carts on your lawn or the grassy boulevard.”

Calgary Parking also plays a key role in ensuring the program is a success, according to the city. Camera-equipped cars help enforce temporary parking bans, but parking officers also validate the bans by verifying community signage is accurate and visible to residents ahead of time.

Vehicles left by the curb during the parking bans may be towed or ticketed by Calgary Parking. Street sweeping tickets start at $80 and increase to $120 if not paid within 30 days.

If a vehicle is towed, it will be taken to either a nearby space or an impound lot. If towed to a nearby space, the vehicle owner will be issued a street sweeping ticket. If the vehicle is taken to an impound lot, the owner will pay the ticket, as well as the tow and impound fee.

According to Calgary Parking’s website, more than 34,000 street sweeping tickets were issued in 2025 — the most since 2019. Comparatively, 27,426 tickets were issued in 2024 and 25,546 tickets in 2023.

“Help us make a clean sweep by keeping your vehicle off the road for the duration of the ban, as street sweepers will make multiple passes,” said Charles Gray, patrol and investigation supervisor at Calgary Parking, in the release. “We co-ordinate our enforcement with (the city’s mobility team) to ensure our camera cars and sweepers are working as closely as possible.”

The city budgets approximately $7 million a year for its annual street sweeping program, which cleans more than 17,000 lane kilometres of residential roadway. Major roads are typically swept overnight.

Due to heavy snow accumulations this week, scheduled community dates on April 20 may be postponed, the city said.

[194293
49,2798,48,230087,225725
post-610663","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-calgary","tag-ca","tag-calgary","tag-canada","tag-chris-hewitt","tag-street-sweeper
["GET
