I logged in as the eighth user account globally, and the first performance cycling coach to ever demo the platform.

Back then, it wasn’t about graphics or avatars. It was about potential. While others saw a game, I saw a gateway, a system that could reprogram how athletes think, breathe, and perform. Others saw pixels. I saw patterns.

The screen didn’t separate us from reality; it revealed it.

Because of Zwift’s immersive landscape, I saw what no one else did: A space to train discipline and cultivate awareness. Others were counting watts. I was decoding wisdom.

Eventually, it hit me: This wasn’t software, it was a mirror. A bridge between physiology and philosophy where the mind’s discipline shapes the body’s design. The Matrix wasn’t out there, it was right here, inside every pedal stroke, every breath, every decision to stay present. The screen didn’t separate us from reality; it revealed it.

Zwift wasn’t about escape, it was about exposure—stripping everything down to rhythm, awareness, and intent. The bike wasn’t just a machine. It was a mirror for the mind. And the Matrix? It’s the space between thought and movement, between decision and discipline. That’s where performance lives.

Technique is repetition made conscious, it’s how strength becomes grace.

And for those reading this who have reservations about training indoors, you’ve got a choice. The same one Neo had when Morpheus held out both pills. You can take the blue pill and keep believing indoor training is boring. Or you can take the red pill and step inside, strip away the noise, and discover how deep the rabbit hole of awareness really goes. Once you wake up to what the ride teaches, there’s no going back.

The Room Before the Road

Most riders dread the trainer. They say it’s boring, repetitive, a grind with no view. I’ve heard it a thousand times: “I don’t like indoor training—it’s too boring.”

But the truth? It’s not the environment that’s the problem. It’s the individual.

Indoor training isn’t confinement, it’s refinement. It’s where the noise fades, and the signal strengthens. The road is full of distractions: terrain, traffic, temperature. Indoors, all that disappears. What’s left is the essence of performance: the rider versus the rhythm.

You can’t download it. You can’t fake it. You feel it. You earn it

What you do in practice becomes what you express on the road. The road is a mirror: it reflects who you are, not who you wish to be. But long before the road, there is the room. The hum of the trainer. The steady breath. The stillness where motion begins.

Indoor training isn’t punishment. It’s presence. It’s not hiding from the elements, it’s meeting yourself without distraction. When the noise disappears, truth appears.

Coach David’s FTP: Form, Technique, Position.

Let’s start here, because this is the heart of the matter. Every athlete wants more power, a higher FTP, better endurance, but few realize that form, technique, and position are what unlock those gains.

Now, when I say FTP, I’m not talking about that FTP. I’m talking about my kind of FTP, the one I coined years ago: Form. Technique. Position. It’s the FTP that no power meter can measure, the one that shapes how every watt is delivered. It’s the art of the invisible, the refinement that happens beneath the data.

You can’t download it. You can’t fake it. You feel it. You earn it.

Form is how you carry yourself in the storm, the quiet posture that turns effort into elegance. Every time you round your shoulders or lock your jaw, you’re teaching your body tension instead of flow.

Technique is repetition made conscious, it’s how strength becomes grace. Position is harmony in geometry—the alignment of breath, core, and intention. The body must not fight the bike; it must become it.

Each defines the next. Each depends on the other. That’s the Power Triad of Control. Every shift in your spine, every unnecessary sway, every erratic knee track steals watts and wastes effort.

The trainer is the mirror that never lies. Indoors, where the variables disappear, position reveals everything, because what you do indoors becomes how you perform outdoors. Poor technique equals poor performance. Period.

Coach David-ism: Clean up the wobble. Quiet the chassis. Let the power speak.

The Cyclist Within

In martial arts, we say: “What you do in practice is what you do in performance.” Every trainer session is kata—deliberate movement, performed with respect and purpose, until mastery becomes muscle memory. You refine the gesture until it refines you.

That’s the heart of indoor training. It’s not about motion, it’s about awareness. And awareness, when paired with adaptability, becomes art. Reminds me of a line I read from Bruce Lee, the philosopher disguised as a martial arts expert: “Be like water, my friend… shapeless, formless… water can flow or it can crash.”

To be formless isn’t to be careless, it’s to move with intention so deep that discipline becomes fluid. To flow through fatigue. To bend with resistance. To become what the moment requires.

Power. Cadence. Heart rate. They’re mirrors, not medals.

I’m not talking about the four walls or a pain cave; I’m talking about the space between breath and belief. The stillness where effort meets understanding. It isn’t a place. It’s a state of being. When you enter that state, the trainer becomes clarity, not confinement. Every drop of sweat becomes part of your becoming.

The Psychology of Cycling Power: Why, How, and What

Numbers matter, but they mean nothing without context. Power. Cadence. Heart rate. They’re mirrors, not medals. Most riders start with the “what”—the data.

But mastery begins with the “why” and the “how”.

Your “why” lives in the limbic brain, the emotional core that drives purpose and commitment. If your “why” is weak, the “what” will collapse. The “how” is behavior—breath, ritual, posture, patience. The place where consistency becomes habit.

Most chase numbers. Few chase awareness. But awareness always wins.

The Practice of Stillness

Indoor training asks a single, powerful question: Can you be calm under pressure? Stillness isn’t the absence of motion, it’s the mastery of it. Every breath, every micro-adjustment, every quiet correction builds control. Breathe through chaos, and your body learns confidence. Ride with awareness, and your technique learns endurance.

Stillness sharpens speed. That’s not poetry, that’s physiology.

You don’t need chaos to find challenge. You need consistency to find truth. Stillness sharpens speed. That’s not poetry, that’s physiology. Calm riders conserve energy. Calm riders make better decisions. Calm riders win.

These ideas aren’t abstract. These are concepts I teach my athletes day in and day out. Form, technique, position, stillness, awareness — none of it is theory.

Embrace indoor training in this way, and you won’t just train watts, you’ll train awareness. You won’t just learn cycling, you’ll learn control. And when mind, body, and emotion align, the ride stops being a workout, and you begin to respect what indoor training teaches.

Putting Theory Into Practice

Let these two indoor trainer session plans teach you how to put these concepts and skills into practice. And remember: mastery follows consistency.

The Calm Power Set

20 minutes in Zone 2 — conversational effort, HR ~65–75 percent max

Cadence: 85–95 rpm — small chainring only, small plate stays light.

If it drifts, don’t fight it — breathe, reset, and bring it back smoothly.

Breath: nasal inhale and long, slow exhale

Focus word: pick one (for example, smooth) and return to it each minute

Win check: quiet shoulders, HR steady, watts even

Coach David-ism: Stillness sharpens speed.

FTP: Ready Form → Technique → Position Loop

Run this 3-minute loop for 4 to 6 rounds in any ride:

Form: for one minute, focus on keeping your jaw relaxed, shoulders down, ribs lifted

Technique: for one minute, focus on pedaling smooth circles using even torque (no toe-punching)

Position: for one minute, focus on maintaining neutral pelvis, soft elbows, eyes forward, hips quiet

Win check: Less upper-body noise Round 1 vs Round 4 = win.

Coach David-ism: Clean up the wobble.

Coach David Lipscomb is the founder of CIS Training Systems, creator of THE SYSTEM 6×6 Framework, and a 1st-degree Black Belt who’s spent over three decades helping cyclists of all levels transform their performance through data, discipline, and purpose.

6 min read In September 2014, I sat before a screen, watching the birth of something called Zwift.…

[445
49,48,635,82,144087
post-610673","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cycling","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-cycling","tag-sports","tag-supes
["GET
