{"id":611856,"date":"2026-04-18T06:37:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T06:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/611856\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T06:37:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T06:37:14","slug":"gta-suspects-used-smart-glasses-ai-tools-in-retail-fraud-tps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/611856\/","title":{"rendered":"GTA suspects used smart glasses, AI tools in retail fraud: TPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto police say arrests have been made in a case where alleged suspects used &#8216;AI-enabled tools&#8217; including smart glasses to capture employee information. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Toronto police say arrests have been made in an \u201corganized\u201d retail fraud where suspects used \u201cAI-enabled tools,\u201d including smart glasses, to distract and capture employee login credentials and passwords.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to police, the frauds occurred between September 2025 and February 2026 at retail locations across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSuspects used AI-enabled tools, including smart glasses and cellular devices, along with distraction techniques to capture employee login credentials and passwords,\u201d police said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tps.ca\/media-centre\/news-releases\/65669\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tps.ca\/media-centre\/news-releases\/65669\/\">news release<\/a> issued Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe captured credentials were then used to access store systems and fraudulently load funds onto gift cards through self-checkout terminals.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Following an investigation, police were able to use surveillance footage to identify 112 occurrences connected to the scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Police said many retail locations suffered \u201csignificant financial losses\u201d as a result of the fraud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The total losses from the incidents are estimated to be about $500,000, Det. David Coffey, of the financial crimes unit, told CP24. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tps.ca\/media-centre\/news-releases\/65669\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tps.ca\/media-centre\/news-releases\/65669\/\">Seven individuals face charges in connection with the investigation<\/a>. The offences include fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and using a computer system with intent to commit an offence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Investigators say they believe there may be more victims and images of the suspects have now been released.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/MVDF5GMDDBEYLCR3QWIA2EE4HA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>suspects, fraud Left to right: Danibros Flores, 49.
