{"id":612229,"date":"2026-04-18T10:49:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T10:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/612229\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T10:49:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T10:49:18","slug":"the-time-has-come-to-jump-on-the-toronto-raptors-bandwagon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/612229\/","title":{"rendered":"The time has come to jump on the Toronto Raptors bandwagon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NBA&#8217;s first round of playoffs begin Saturday, and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/raptors-clinch-playoffs-spot-9.7161231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the first time in four years<\/a>, the Toronto Raptors will be in the fight.<\/p>\n<p>The Raptors begin a best-of-seven series against the Cleveland Cavaliers at 1 p.m. ET Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>And while the pundits may not be calling for Toronto to come out on top, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/Ij3342zc7qo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">don&#8217;t try telling<\/a> star Scottie Barnes the Raptors are the underdogs.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That shit don&#8217;t matter,&#8221; he told reporters this week.<\/p>\n<p>This is the confidence fans will want to see their team summon in the days ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you need to know about the Raptors as they begin their latest playoff journey.<\/p>\n<p>How did the Raptors get here?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to forget it hasn&#8217;t been that long since the Raptors won it all, against the Golden State Warriors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/nba-finals-raptors-warriors-game-6-recap-1.5174715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Kawhi Leonard takes a selfie during the Toronto Raptors' championship parade in June 2019\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776509355_786_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4973262032085561\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>The Raptors won it all in June 2019 and got to celebrate with a championship parade in Toronto \u2014 where Kawhi Leonard took a selfie. The playoffs ended up happening way later than normal and occurring within a so-called bubble. The Raptors lost the Eastern Conference semifinals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/toronto-raptors-boston-celtics-game-7-1.5721067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to the Boston Celtics<\/a> in September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/toronto-raptors-nick-nurse-reflects-bizarre-season-covid19-1.6021178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">failed to advance<\/a> to the playoffs in the 2020-21 season, but returned to the post-season the following year and lost the first-round series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/toronto-raptors-philadelphia-76ers-round-1-game-5-recap-apr-28-1.6434724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to the Philadelphia 76ers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, the Raptors have been going through a rebuild, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/masai-ujiri-patience-siakam-trade-1.7087894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">began under Masai Ujiri<\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/toronto-raptors-masai-ujiri-out-as-president-1.7572491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">left the organization<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>How did they get to the playoffs this year?<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes in the middle of a slam-dunk\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776509355_262_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5015277171540813\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Raptors forward Scottie Barnes makes a slam dunk during a game against the Brooklyn Nets on April 12. (Steven Senne\/The Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>How Toronto fared against the east&#8217;s better teams is important, because the Raptors play a conference rival in Cleveland and will continue to do so in the next two rounds of the playoffs \u2014 if they make it that far.<\/p>\n<p>The only time a team from the east will play a team from the Western Conference will be in the NBA Finals.<\/p>\n<p>How good is Cleveland?<\/p>\n<p>Cleveland finished fourth in the east, with a 52-30 record. The two teams last played one another in November \u2014 a month in which the Raptors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/team\/1610612761\/boxscores?SeasonType=Regular+Season&amp;DateFrom=11%2F01%2F2025&amp;DateTo=11%2F30%2F2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">went 12-3<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/raptors\/schedule?EventSchedule=3&amp;OpponentTeamID=1610612739&amp;SeasonType=002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">two of those wins<\/a> coming against the Cavs.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Cleveland\u2019s made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/james-harden-darius-garland-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a big trade<\/a> for James Harden, a 11-time all-star and lethal scorer, and the team has also largely recovered from a string of injuries that hampered their roster.  <\/p>\n<p>The Cavs&#8217; biggest star, though, is Donovan Mitchell, an electric shooting guard, and Evan Mobley, a young big man who was drafted in the same year as the Raptors&#8217; Barnes.   <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers dribbles a basketball while being guarded by Ja'Kobe Walter of the Toronto Raptors\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776509357_90_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4998870056497176\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Cleveland&#8217;s Donovan Mitchell dribbles the ball while Toronto&#8217;s Ja&#8217;Kobe Walter defends during a Nov. 24, 2025 game held at Scotiabank Arena. (Andrew Lahodynskyj\/Getty Images)The Cavs beat the Raptors before, right?<\/p>\n<p>Historically, the Raptors haven&#8217;t fared well against the Cavs in the playoffs: LeBron James-led Cleveland squads swept Toronto in the Eastern Conference semi-final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/toronto-raptors-cleveland-cavaliers-game-4-1.4652461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in 2018<\/a>,  just as they did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/raptors-cavaliers-game-four-sunday-1.4103676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in 2017.<\/a> Toronto also lost to Cleveland in six games in the Eastern Conference final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/cavaliers\/news\/features\/recap-raptors6-160527\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in 2016<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The Akron, Ohio,-born James no longer plays for Cleveland these days, so he won&#8217;t be a factor in this series.<\/p>\n<p>Who&#8217;s putting up points for the Raptors?<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Toronto Raptors forward Brandon Ingram dribbles the ball, while being guarded by Chaney Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776509357_80_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4980380319951705\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Raptors forward Brandon Ingram is seen dribbling while being guarded by Chaney Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets during an April 12 game at Toronto&#8217;s Scotiabank Arena. (Kevin Sousa\/Imagn Images\/Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Veteran Brandon Ingram is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/team\/1610612761\/players-traditional?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=D&amp;sort=PTS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Raptors&#8217; leading scorer<\/a>, averaging 21.5 points per game.<\/p>\n<p>Close behind him in scoring are Canada&#8217;s R.J. The Raptors have not played against Harden since he joined the Cavs. (Colin Hubbard\/The Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell and Harden are also among the top-15 most prolific sharpshooters in the NBA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/leaders?StatCategory=FG3M&amp;PerMode=Totals&amp;SeasonType=Regular+Season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">this season<\/a>: Mitchell was tied for 10th in the most three-pointers made (224) and Harden was 15th on that same list (215).<\/p>\n<p>The only Raptor in the top 50 is Immanuel Quickley (in 32nd spot, with 178 three-point shots made). He was reported to be dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nba\/article\/raptors-immanuel-quickley-day-to-day-with-mild-hamstring-strain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a mild hamstring strain<\/a> ahead of the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Will Harden get his ring?<\/p>\n<p>Harden has played in 173 playoff games during his 17-season NBA career. But he&#8217;s yet to win a championship.<\/p>\n<p>A question for some is whether he&#8217;ll show up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know what he can do,\u201d Barnes said, calling Harden an all-time great scorer.<\/p>\n<p>Harden, for his part, says the mid-season trade that brought him to Cleveland represents <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/harden-cavaliers-raptors-b30b6c190f4a4c4b111ae21541c14ac9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">his best shot<\/a> to finally win a title and get a championship ring.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m here,&#8221; Harden said this week.<\/p>\n<p>Does the coach think the Raps are ready?<\/p>\n<p>Raptors coach Darko Rajakovi\u0107 told reporters this week that a chance to play for a championship is something the Toronto club has been working towards since the start of the season.    <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovi\u0107 speaks to forward Sandro Mamukelashvili during a game\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776509358_518_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4947491248541425\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovi\u0107 speaks to Sandro Mamukelashvili during a March 18 game against the Chicago Bulls. Huh\/The Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>While he said the Raptors can take some things away from their season series with Cleveland, he also noted those matchups came early in the year, so things have changed.<\/p>\n<p>Rajakovi\u0107 said the team will be playing for the fans and the city \u2014 but the central opinions that guide them on the court will be based on players, coaches and staff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are ready,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to block all the outside noise and really focus on us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How do these Raptors compare to past squads?<\/p>\n<p>The Raptors&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/team\/1610612761\/seasons?dir=D&amp;sort=YEAR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">46-win total<\/a> at the end of the regular season was the highest for Toronto since 2021-22.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto has won 47 or more regular-season games on 10 occasions (including during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/basketball\/nba\/nick-nurse-nba-coach-of-year-1.5696481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season<\/a>) \u2014 the 11th best win-total in franchise history.<\/p>\n<p>The Raptors entered the NBA for the start of the 1995-96 season.
