{"id":612379,"date":"2026-04-18T12:38:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T12:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/612379\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T12:38:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T12:38:08","slug":"ontario-mom-shaken-after-blade-found-inside-toddlers-snack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/612379\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario mom shaken after blade found inside toddler\u2019s snack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">An Ontario mother is speaking out after she says that she found a \u201cjagged\u201d metal blade inside a bag of dried fruit she purchased for her two-year-old daughter from a grocery store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The incident happened on April 10 after the mother purchased a bag of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metro.ca\/en\/online-grocery\/aisles\/snacks\/nuts-seeds-fruit\/dried-fruit\/organic-dried-fruit-blend\/p\/059749985932\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.metro.ca\/en\/online-grocery\/aisles\/snacks\/nuts-seeds-fruit\/dried-fruit\/organic-dried-fruit-blend\/p\/059749985932\" target=\"_blank\">Organic Dried Fruit Blend<\/a> from a Metro grocery store near the area of Merivale Road and Viewmount Drive in Ottawa. The product is also manufactured and <a href=\"https:\/\/madeinca.ca\/health-foods-lifesmart-metro-brands\/#:~:text=Submit%20a%20Business-,Health%20Food:%20Lifesmart%20(Metro%20Brands)%20%F0%9F%8D%81,Discover%20Canadian.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/madeinca.ca\/health-foods-lifesmart-metro-brands\/#:~:text=Submit%20a%20Business-,Health%20Food:%20Lifesmart%20(Metro%20Brands)%20%F0%9F%8D%81,Discover%20Canadian.\" target=\"_blank\">owned by the company Metro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMy daughter was eating a snack\u2026 and there was a metal blade right in the middle of it,\u201d said 38-year-old Amy Mastromattei. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThank the Lord she didn\u2019t get injured.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mastromattei, described the object as roughly four inches long, with a noticeable sharpened edge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OMGARLP3LRHVHINNCWVG26QJ6Q.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"444\"\/>METAL BLADE A metal blade found at an Ottawa grocery store has sparked investigations from management to the federal government (Photo by Amy Mastromattei). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Footage reviewed by CTV News showed the blade inside the opened package.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAs I looked in the package, I noticed there was a metal blade. It\u2019s kind of jagged\u2026 you can see that the blade has cranberry over it, so it\u2019s clearly from their factory,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She said her family regularly shops at that particular location and expects quality checks to come at a bare minimum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe pay extra for organic food not to have metal in our snacks, especially a snack that we give to our kids,\u201d she said, adding that her children are two-and-a-half years old and nine-months old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cShe could have eaten it&#8230; My nine-month-old could have picked it up and eaten it,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Rejecting a $25 gift card<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Shortly after the blade was discovered, Mastromattei says her husband quickly contacted the store but was left puzzled when he learned that the best officials could offer was a $25 gift card. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In order to receive the gift card, the couple says they were instructed to bring the item back as soon as possible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI just don\u2019t believe (a $25 gift card) is acceptable. I would sue if I could\u2026 I shouldn\u2019t have to worry about my two-year-old eating metal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">CTV News contacted the company, and in a phone call, officials said staff were under the impression that the item would be returned so they could investigate further. THE CANADIAN PRESS\/Cole Burston Multiple investigations underway<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a statement, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency tells CTV News it is \u201caware of the reported incident\u201d and is \u201cconducting a food safety investigation following a complaint received by its Ottawa office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear how long the probe will take, but the agency says investigations can include tracing distribution, inspecting facilities, and assessing health risks.
