Last week was a whirlwind for NBA coaching legend Doc Rivers. After getting fired<\/a> by the Milwaukee Bucks following their disastrous regular season, Rivers revealed a major announcement<\/a> during his appearance on Friday’s episode of “The Bill Simmons Podcast.”<\/p>\n

“I told my coaches, I\u2019m done. I loved coaching. Loved it. I had a lot of success at it, had way more ups than downs,” Rivers told Simmons. “But at the end of the day, I\u2019ve given 47 years or whatever, I don\u2019t even know how old I am \u2026 with no off time. I just wanted a break. I want to get away. The grandkids and just life in general, man.”<\/p>\n

While Rivers hasn’t officially announced his retirement from coaching yet, it sounds like that part of his career is over.<\/p>\n

“Right now, I can tell you, Bill, I think it was time, so I\u2019d be surprised if I coached another game, I\u2019ll put it that way,” Rivers added.<\/p>\n

Rivers is\u00a064 and has spent over four decades in the NBA. After a successful\u00a013-year career as an All-Star point guard, he enjoyed a 27-year career as a head coach for the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics<\/a>, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks.<\/p>\n

Rivers had his longest tenure with the Celtics, where he spent nine years and led them to a championship<\/a> in 2008.<\/p>\n

He was one of the most successful coaches in league history, winning NBA Coach of the Year during his first season as a head coach and racking up over\u00a01,300 wins in the regular season and playoffs combined. However, his teams developed a reputation for falling short in the postseason, which damaged his reputation somewhat over the final decade of his career.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for Rivers, his coaching career ended on a down note this year with the injury-plagued Bucks losing 50 games\u00a0— the second-most of his career. If this is the end of his coaching career, however, he still goes down as one of the league’s best coaches of the 21st century.<\/p>\n
