For some, it means lining up before doors open; for others, it’s a chance to spend time digging without a rush.

RANGE checked in with five Calgary record stores worth visiting this weekend — and the people behind the counters.

Recordland
(1208 9 Ave SE)

In Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood, Inglewood, Recordland feels less like a store and more like a living archive. What started as a basement operation has grown into a labyrinth of sound—rows upon rows of vinyl mapping out decades of listening habits, obsessions, and rediscoveries.

Everything is meticulously organized, from Breakfast in America to Taylor Swift to hardcore metal. But for owner Eraz Cohen, the real magic lives in the used bins. That’s where new collectors learn to appreciate aged material, and where lifers still stumble onto long-sought titles.

Recordland isn’t about chasing the latest drop—it’s about possibility. Exploring the stacks means losing track of time in the best way.

As an RSD Canada pledge store, they bring in a large spread of exclusives (with a particular emphasis on in-demand pop titles), take advance input from customers on what to order, and use Instagram the night before to share what actually landed and how to get it at the shop.

What’s your approach to curating what ends up on the shelves?

The younger generation is buying things like Breakfast in America now, and that gives me enthusiasm about a title. There’s an expiry date on that kind of music… Elvis is the best example. Elvis records used to be the deadest dead weight, but ever since they made that biopic, the younger generation started buying them. That’s the only thing that revived Elvis on vinyl here.

How do you feel your store fits into Calgary’s music community?

We’re one of the OGs… we’re very music-community friendly. We’ve kind of become, these are not my words, these are other people’s words, like a cultural staple of Calgary, I think.

How long has Recordland been around?

We’ve had a store since the mid-’80s. Three different locations in Inglewood, and we’ve been here since ’94. But my dad was slinging wax before that… he was a DJ and he also worked at a record-pressing plant… When we moved here in ’75, he bought stereo gear before he even bought furniture… Even before we opened up the store in the mid-’80s, in the early ’80s we were selling records out of our basement.

What’s one record or section you think first-time visitors should go to?

They should go into the used… A lot of modern-day consumers don’t go past the new section, and they don’t realize that the other side of the coin is in used… If I was to tell the kids anything: go into the used. You’re going to save a lot of money, and you’re going to completely see the other side of the coin of the culture.

Sloth Records
(736b 17 Ave SW)

Sloth Records, tucked along one of the city’s longest stretches of independent retail, feels like the blueprint for an indie shop. Since 1995, the upstairs space has been a haven for collectors chasing their next find.

Originally launched as a label documenting Calgary’s punk scene, Sloth evolved into a storefront without losing its DIY backbone. Artists can still sell their music there with little to no cut, keeping the shop closely tied to the local scene.

Owner Dave Muir’s decades promoting shows have turned the store into more than a retailer—it’s a hub for posters, in-store performances, and word-of-mouth discoveries.

On Record Store Day, the loyalty shows. People line up overnight for discounts, deep cuts, and a packed slate of exclusives.

This year, the rollout is precise: doors open April 18 with in-store-only releases, lineups starting as early as 5 a.m., and a full stock preview posted the day before. No holds, no duplicates, no online sales.

What’s your approach to curating what ends up on the shelves?

For the most part our customers dictate our stock… We learned a long time ago that the best policy is to listen to what you are being asked for.

How does your store fit into Calgary’s music community?

Sloth Records in some shape or form has been an active part of the local music community for nearly 40 years… We have always been a place where artists can sell their music, we take little to no percentage of local artist sales, and have been involved with promoting shows for just as long.

What’s one section you think first-time visitors should not miss?

Regardless of what you are looking for at the moment we feel fairly confident you will walk away with something you either expected to find, or never thought you’d see.

Blackbyrd Myoozik
(1006 17 Ave SW)

On 17th Avenue SW, Blackbyrd Myoozik’s Calgary outpost brings Rock. Bottom. Prices. to the city’s urban core.

Low lights, black bird effigies, and hanging vines give the shop a warm, immersive feel—less retail, more listening space. Where many Calgary stores lean rock, Blackbyrd centres jazz, hip hop, and soul, with plenty of niche odds and ends.

Their approach balances business and taste, keeping reliable sellers in stock while staying true to the kind of curation they want to champion.

That care extends online, where a dedicated RSD section and mailing list keep regulars updated on releases, events, and sales.

On Record Store Day, it’s chaos in the best way: lineups around the block, lawn chairs on the sidewalk, and a rush for pop titles. Through it all, Blackbyrd stays grounded in the belief that a good recommendation can change how you hear everything else.

How would you describe your shop in three words?

Rock. Bottom. Prices.

What’s your approach to curating what ends up on the shelves?

We try to find a happy balance between what we know will sell (we are a business after all), and what we personally are into and would love to expose our customers to.

How does your store fit into Calgary’s music community?

Calgary is primarily a rock town, and we’re not necessarily a rock-centric store… We like to think of ourselves as a jazz, hip hop and soul store (with some niche odds and ends to boot).

What’s one record or section you think first-time visitors should not miss?

We have a few that sit on our Rushmore; D’Angelo’s Voodoo, Donald Byrd’s Place and Spaces, Pharoah Sanders’ Karma, Alice Coltrane’s Journey In Satchidinanda, J Dilla’s Donuts, and Jaimie Branch’s Fly or Die series.

Hot Wax Records (114 10th St NW) | Melodiya Records (2523 17 Ave SW)

For Eddie Dalrymple, Melodiya came first. Open since 1995, it’s long been a go-to for collectors chasing solid deals and well-stocked shelves.

Hot Wax, though older (est. 1978), joined later—saved from fading out when Dalrymple and his partner took it over. Today, both shops run on the same philosophy: focus on used vinyl, keep pricing fair, and make digging worth it.

The difference is in the feel. Melodiya carries a ’90s indie energy, a little tighter and more dialled in. Hot Wax leans classic rock, complete with a basement full of CDs. Both reward patience, with bins that mix staples, obscurities, and everything in between.

On Record Store Day, they don’t chase every exclusive. Instead, they lean into their strengths: setting aside standout used records all year and rolling out a strong, thoughtfully priced drop alongside a handful of RSD titles.

What’s your approach to curating what ends up on the shelves?

Very much about listening to what the customers like, researching labels they enjoy and just making sure that the depth of catalogue is there whether it be the big hits or obscure gems.

How does your store fit into Calgary’s music community?

Both have been around for a very long time and have always promoted and stocked local releases. That’s a huge part of the record collecting community and an essential part of our customer relationship. Got stuff to get rid of? We’ll buy it!

What’s one record or section you think first-time visitors should not miss?

Always hit the new arrivals used bin. It’s the best way to get a flavour for the shops (or any shop) and a great way for new collectors to get a sense of the availability and price of records in their area.

And the people behind them — a Record Store Day exclusive.
