The highly contested Strait of Hormuz is home to dolphins and the most diverse coral population in the region, an underwater world that scientists say could be in jeopardy as conflict swirls around it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m00023b6qolxq509f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite Iran announcing a reopening of the strait during a temporary ceasefire, about 2,000 vessels remain trapped in the Gulf as of Friday morning, carrying a total of around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/17\/world\/live-news\/iran-war-trump-lebanon-israel-ceasefire#cmo2yjl6y0000396uxdosah6p\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">21 billion liters<\/a> of oil. There have been at least 16 attacks on ships in the Persian Gulf and near the Strait of Hormuz since the war broke out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05uxh700123b6qz6qwpnh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nina Noelle, a spokesperson from Greenpeace, an independent global campaigning network that focuses on environmental issues, told CNN that through continuous monitoring, the group\u2019s researchers \u201cregularly detect oil slicks in the region,\u201d including one linked to the Iranian vessel Shahid Bagheri that was struck by a US warplane in early March.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m00033b6qmjkx5yi3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the organization, the vessel is still leaking oil \u201cnear the Khuran Strait and poses a potential risk to nearby protected wetlands.\u201d The Khuran Strait is a narrower passageway that runs north of the Strait of Hormuz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m00043b6qojkkqhcu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Strait of Hormuz\u2019s geographical position makes it a crucial site not just politically but ecologically as well \u2014 it sits at a transition zone between the deep, cool Gulf of Oman and the shallow, warm Persian Gulf. Currents sweeping in from the Gulf of Oman carry nutrients and larvae that fuel plankton blooms and coral reefs, while deeper upwellings draw in reef fish and migratory whale sharks that pass through seasonally.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m00053b6quk7f1a5f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In more peaceful times, scuba diving and dolphin-watching in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/musandam-peninsula-oman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Musandam Governorate<\/a>, a part of Oman that borders the strait, was a magnet for tourism. The strait provides nesting grounds for sea turtles, and the coast of Oman is home to the critically endangered and nonmigratory Arabian humpback whales, with dugongs and sea snakes in the surrounding waters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m00063b6qscz0uyc0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the conflict drags on, scientists are increasingly concerned about the impact of oil spills on animals in the region.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m00073b6qpaijxd3s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMany of the compounds found in crude oil will target heart function and respiration,\u201d said Martin Grosell, professor and chair of the department of marine biology and ecology at the University of Miami\u2019s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Sciences. \u201cProlonged oil exposure will lead to an overexertion of the stress response, and that suppresses immune function, rendering animals more susceptible to infections and other types of environmental insults.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m00083b6qzyop45xm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Crude oil also disrupts animals\u2019 nervous systems, Grosell added, impairing their senses and ability to navigate, process input, and properly orient themselves in their environment.  This affects how they respond to predators and find prey, meaning harm to individual animals can cascade through the entire ecosystem.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m000a3b6qh88wxice@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage between Iran to the north and Oman and the United Arab Emirates to the south, sits at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. Aaron Bartholomew, a professor of biology at the American University of Sharjah in the UAE, who has conducted field research throughout the region, describes the strait as the ecological crown of the Gulf.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/20260408-hormuz-zoom-hp.png\" alt=\"Migratory whale sharks pass through the strait seasonally as Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live along the Musandam Peninsula in northern Oman. Offshore islands between Iran and the UAE are nesting sites for green and hawksbill sea turtles.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2160\" width=\"3841\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05zgr300193b6qusje7t4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Strait of Hormuz is known for having the most diverse and some of the highest coral cover in all of the Gulf,\u201d Bartholomew said. The richest concentrations sit on the Iranian side of the strait, as well as along parts of the southern Gulf coast. The coral reefs in the area have been heavily impacted by bleaching events linked to rising ocean temperatures, but they have endured while corals elsewhere have not.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m000b3b6qqryzbcsc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bartholomew explained that Gulf conditions push marine life to its physiological limits. \u201cWe have very, very hot temperatures during the summer and surprisingly cold temperatures in the winter,\u201d he said. \u201cWe also have elevated salinity because of all the evaporation from the Gulf,\u201d he added, referring to high concentrations of dissolved salts in the water that typically cause ecological harm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo0jvrxb000f3b6rawrtn1sj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In most of the world\u2019s oceans, such extremes would be lethal to coral. Here, the conditions have produced \u201carguably the toughest corals in the world,\u201d Bartholomew said. He said that the corals in the region are important for researchers who are actively studying them as a model for how they might survive the hotter, more volatile oceans that the human-fueled climate crisis will bring.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m000c3b6qe7cohjgb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCorals are the most biodiverse ecosystem in the oceans, and they support a wide variety of fish and invertebrate species,\u201d Bartholomew added. \u201cThey\u2019re certainly important for fisheries. They\u2019re important for tourism as well.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2232729803.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the vibrant coral reef at one of Musandam Peninsula's popular diving sites in Khasab, Oman, in August 2025. The reefs provide shelter and food for a wide range of marine species.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1691\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m000d3b6q9odilhdr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beyond the reefs, the waters around the strait support a dense and varied community of animals. Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live along the Musandam Peninsula in northern Oman. Bartholomew said he\u2019s concerned about such mammals that have to rise to the surface to breathe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74m000e3b6qomfds5m4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Offshore islands, such as Sir Bani Yas Island, scattered between Iran and the UAE, serve as nesting sites for green and hawksbill sea turtles. \u201cIt\u2019s well documented that oil spills in the UAE waters lead to turtle mortality, so they basically die in the oil spill itself and then wash up on shore,\u201d Bartholomew said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74n000f3b6qpuev9n79@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sea snakes also occupy the shallow coastal waters of the UAE. Whale sharks pass through seasonally as they follow mackerel tuna that spawn in the oil-rich offshore waters of Qatar. Because fishing is prohibited near the rigs, these waters have become an accidental marine-protected area. \u201cThe whale sharks follow them in and eat the eggs of the spawning mackerel tuna,\u201d Bartholomew explained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74n000g3b6qypjfw0i5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are also mangroves \u201cup and down the southern coast, particularly in Abu Dhabi emirate, but also in the northern emirates as well, such as Ras Al Khaimah and also Umm Al Quwain,\u201d Bartholomew said. Gray mangroves, or Avicennia marina, are abundant in the area and are typically resilient to oil spills, \u201cas long as what is known as their pneumatophores are not covered,\u201d Bartholomew said. Pneumatophores are exposed root structures that stick up and act like snorkels, reaching above the surface to transport oxygen to the mangrove tree\u2019s underground roots. Because of this, mangroves \u201ccan generally survive oil spills, but if their pneumatophores are covered up, then they\u2019ll be impacted and potentially die.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74n000h3b6q3awgdgjg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Farther from the strait, in the shallow seagrass meadows west of Abu Dhabi and south of Qatar, lives the world\u2019s second-largest population of dugongs, a mammal closely related to manatees. \u201cWe have some of the largest continuous seagrass beds in the world there,\u201d Bartholomew said. Though the dugongs are currently buffered from the conflict in the strait, Bartholomew noted that a spill reaching their coastal waters would pose a serious threat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74n000j3b6qc2e6znty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The University of Miami\u2019s Grosell has spent 15 years studying the impacts of oil on marine life following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74n000k3b6qjum8otso@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou\u2019ve heard the saying that oil and water don\u2019t mix, but that is not true,\u201d Grosell said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74n000l3b6qe8shzu5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wave action on the water\u2019s surface can break oil into smaller droplets that sink into the ocean depths. \u201cCrude oil, or even refined oil, is a very complex mixture of thousands of chemicals.\u201d Some toxic chemicals are also released from the oil and enter the water column, the ocean habitat that extends from the surface to the seafloor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74o000n3b6q77aqiw3l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When chemicals from oil dissolve into the water column, water-breathing animals such as fish absorb them through their gills and corals absorb them directly through their tissues. Oil that is on the surface is harmful to animals that come up to the surface to breathe, such as dolphins, sea turtles and sea snakes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74o000o3b6qz0tfv68n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For both air breathers and water breathers, many chemicals in crude oil target the heart and respiratory function, the immune system, the sensory system and the central nervous system.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/shutterstock-editorial-12117209c.jpg\" alt=\"A turtle makes tracks on a beach after burying its eggs in the sand in June 2021 in the Ras al Hadd Turtle Reserve in Oman. About 10,000 green turtles make the trip on this beach every year.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74o000p3b6qhvqyvu89@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSome of these compounds found in crude oil will affect sensory systems: the ability to smell things, the ability to see things and the ability to detect vibrations in the environment,\u201d Grosell said. Corals face similar effects as \u201cthey catch prey from the water through fine tentacles and would be exposed to the chemicals that are found in the water column during oil contamination.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74o000q3b6q8qc0hs96@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are also reports of effects on the central nervous system,\u201d affecting the ability of animals to process input from their sensory systems. Research on oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico has also shown that exposure to oil can reduce fish reproduction, Grosell added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74o000r3b6qpvhnwugp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Altogether, these factors can affect how animals make decisions and how long they live. The chemical effects of crude oil on animals can be less immediately lethal to them than being directly smothered by oil in a spill, \u201cbut in a complex environment where you\u2019re constantly balancing obtaining resources and avoiding being preyed upon, those effects on decision-making, or on sensory systems, or even subtle effects on your heart could lead to shorter lifespans for a lot of these animals.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo05n74o000s3b6qp7zwn1bw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because of the intricacies of predator-prey relationships, impacts on individual organisms will ripple across the ecosystem, Grosell said.
