{"id":613808,"date":"2026-04-19T05:07:55","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T05:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/613808\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T05:07:55","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T05:07:55","slug":"calgary-police-issue-more-than-10000-speeding-tickets-in-first-10-weeks-of-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/613808\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary police issue more than 10,000 speeding tickets in first 10 weeks of 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Calgary police say they\u2019ve handed out the equivalent of about one speeding ticket every 10 minutes in the first 10 weeks of this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Of those, 123 tickets \u2014 an average of more than one a day \u2014 have been issued for vehicles going in excess of 50 km\/h over the speed limit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to most recent data, which reflects totals as of mid-March, 30 per cent of the 10,493 tickets written this year have been officer-issued, while the remainder were through photo radar and cameras. More than 300 officer-issued speeding tickets were given out in construction zones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Traffic safety continues to be a top concern for the <a href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/tag\/calgary-police-service\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Calgary Police Service;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Calgary Police Service&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Calgary Police Service<\/a> but Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward said in a recent press conference that the problem doesn\u2019t seem to be getting any better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cCurrently, we\u2019re trending in the wrong direction,\u201d he said. However, a significant majority of that drop can be attributed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/updated-provincial-guidelines-ending-photo-213152861.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:province\u2019s restrictions on automated traffic enforcement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;province\u2019s restrictions on automated traffic enforcement&quot;}\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">province\u2019s restrictions on automated traffic enforcement<\/a> beginning April 1, 2025, which resulted in the removal of speed-on-green cameras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The city has since received approval from the province to restore speed-on-green enforcement at five high-risk intersections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">870 tickets were issued last year for speeds more than 50 km\/h over the limit, which dropped from 1,004 in 2024. However, numbers are still trending upward over the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>City touts Vision Zero plan to cut collisions<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe want to remind everyone that traffic safety is everyone\u2019s responsibility,\u201d Woodward said, adding that although the lack of improvement \u201cdoes get frustrating,\u201d he remains confident in the partnership with the city on the Safer Mobility Plan, which aims to reduce harm on the city\u2019s roadways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to keep moving forward with that,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a good relationship with the city in the way that we\u2019re working, and we have to be confident in what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Safer Mobility Plan is the city\u2019s strategic plan toward Vision Zero, a global initiative aimed at achieving mobility free of fatalities and major injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The plan aims to reduce fatal and major-injury collisions, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/city-council-looking-solutions-following-234859251.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:pedestrian;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;pedestrian&quot;}\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" serious-injury collisions through community safety education and using data and community feedback to guide our enforcement efforts,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/tag\/calgary-police-service\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Calgary Police Service;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That work is a shared effort with the city, the province, school boards and a variety of community organizations, with a focus on high-risk behaviours, namely speeding, impaired driving and distracted driving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhile we and our partners have identified key areas where we will be looking to improve enforcement, engineering, education and engagement, we unfortunately cannot be everywhere at all times, and we rely on people in our community to watch out for each other, travel with care and infrastructure such as signal and crosswalk upgrades, curb extensions and speed cushions, as well as community services and partnerships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Troy McLeod, the city\u2019s director of mobility, said in a recent press conference that recent collision trends have highlighted the need for ongoing improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe are actively working with partners like the Calgary Police Service, bylaw officers and subject matter experts to review compliance trends, upgrade traffic controls and promote educational campaigns about safe driving and crossing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">City council has allotted an additional $7.5 million for necessary infrastructure improvements, he said, which is \u201ca significant increase\u201d over the program\u2019s regular budget.
