{"id":614171,"date":"2026-04-19T09:31:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T09:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/614171\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T09:31:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T09:31:15","slug":"chad-kelly-still-hopes-to-get-back-to-the-nfl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/614171\/","title":{"rendered":"Chad Kelly still hopes to get back to the NFL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eight years after his only regular-season NFL game, quarterback Chad Kelly is still hoping for another shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denvergazette.com\/2026\/04\/13\/cfl-star-qb-chad-kelly-says-hes-a-new-person-8-years-after-ugly-exit-from-broncos\/#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">That\u2019s always the goal<\/a>,\u201d Kelly told Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette. \u201cIt\u2019s always a goal of quarterbacks, whatever league you\u2019re in, is to get to the top of the top. . . . My talent speaks for itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After spending 2017 and part of 2018 with the Broncos, Kelly had two seasons with the Colts. Out of football in 2021, he landed in the CFL the following year.<\/p>\n<p>And it went well. Kelly, the nephew of Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, led the Toronto Argonauts to a Grey Cup win as a backup. The next year, Chad Kelly was named the CFL\u2019s Most Outstanding Player.<\/p>\n<p>Things got complicated, to say the least, in 2024. He was suspended for the first nine games of the 2024 season <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nfl\/profootballtalk\/rumor-mill\/news\/cfl-suspends-chad-kelly-at-least-9-games-for-actions-toward-female-strength-coach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">due to actions against a female strength coach<\/a>. After he returned, a broken leg ended his season and kept him from playing in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s now back, and the Argonauts head to training camp on May 2.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly\u2019s off-field incidents made him a seventh-round pick in 2017. He was released the day after entering a random home, sat on the couch next to a woman holding a small child, and was chased away by a man wielding a vacuum-cleaner tube. He eventually pleaded guilty to misdemeanor second-degree trespassing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sought help right after,\u2019\u2019 Kelly told Tomasson. \u201cThere was counseling. There was mental health stuff. . . . I self-reflected and knew what I can and can\u2019t do and the same with drinking. I definitely would do a lot of drinking and that\u2019s not good. You\u2019re a quarterback. You got to represent the team and everybody in the right light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still only 32, Kelly has performed well in Canada.
