For a brief moment, there was LIV Golf CEO Scott O\u2019Neil, admitting live on camera that the league would no longer receive funding support from the Saudi Public Investment Fund after the 2026 season. In doing so, O\u2019Neil had broken ranks and confirmed the various reports<\/a> that had said as much in the days prior.<\/p>\n

But in a flash, it was gone, presumably in the hope that it would be forgotten.<\/p>\n

That, of course, is not how the internet works.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, when LIV\u2019s broadcast from Mexico City was actually working<\/a>, its broadcasters offered stiff rebuttals to reports of its impending demise<\/a>, clarifying that the league was a paragon of financial stability. O\u2019Neil even joined the broadcast at one point to echo those sentiments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, when O\u2019Neil spoke with TNT Sports UK reporter Oliver Wilson, who asked the CEO about Sergio Garcia\u2019s comments that funding would be in place through 2030, the LIV chief came clean<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, of course, that is not the way the world works, and we have commitments to this being a going concern. The reality is you\u2019re funded through the season, and then you work like crazy to create a business and a business plan to keep us going,\u201d said O\u2019Neil. \u201cBut that\u2019s not different than any other private equity business in the history of mankind.\u201d<\/p>\n

That clip was uploaded to X and quickly went viral. However, soon after it was posted, the video was deleted. Over three hours later, per The Telegraph<\/a>, it was reposted on the TNT Sports account, but with O\u2019Neil\u2019s admission omitted.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not surprising that LIV would want that admission to disappear. But as to why a broadcaster would self-delete and edit an interview clip to remove the most newsworthy and pertinent aspect of the interview, that raises many larger questions about journalistic impartiality, influence, and control.<\/p>\n

Suffice it to say, whatever they were hoping to achieve by deleting and reposting the clip, they drew far more attention to the interview and the fallout.<\/p>\n

Was TNT Sports UK directed by LIV to scrub the admission? Or did they do it of their own accord to be a \u201cgood soldier\u201d for LIV? And which answer would be worse?<\/p>\n
