Why is the neighbourhood called Mile End?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s widely believed that Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Mile End takes its name from a 19th-century English-style suburb, referencing a location roughly one mile beyond the city\u2019s early limits. The story is often linked to English-born landowner John Clark, who in 1804 named his property \u201cMile End Farm\u201d and opened a tavern at what is now the intersection of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Mont-Royal Avenue.<\/p>\n

According to this popular account, the area sat about a mile north of Montr\u00e9al\u2019s boundaries at the time\u2014then around Sherbrooke Street\u2014giving rise to the name. The Mile End Tavern became a well-known stop along key routes like Saint-Laurent and C\u00f4te Sainte-Catherine, further cementing the designation.<\/p>\n

The name is also thought to reflect British influence, possibly borrowed from a district in London, and reinforced by English-speaking residents who frequented nearby horse racing grounds in the mid-1800s. Locally, the neighbourhood was once referred to as \u201cmolenne,\u201d a French adaptation of \u201cMile End,\u201d before evolving into the vibrant, multicultural and creative hub it is today.<\/p>\n
