There were players she simply couldn’t seem to beat and, largely due to injury, she couldn’t consistently compete at the highest level for an extended period of time.

But this year, Muchova has discarded those narratives in favour of another, better story. On the cusp of getting back into the top 10 and sitting comfortably at #5 in the year-end race, Muchova has been one of the best players on the WTA Tour this season, and she’s done it all out of her comfort zone.

Karolina Muchova is writing a new script in 2026

Muchova’s first title came in 2019, when she won the Korea Open. Since then, though, she lost four finals, including a Grand Slam final and two WTA 1000 finals. Muchova had good runs at big tournaments, but she couldn’t get the job done. And she wasn’t finding success at smaller tournaments either, leaving her with just the one trophy for seven years.

Right out the gates in 2026, though, Muchova silenced the doubt. She blitzed through the Doha draw and upset tenth seed Victoria Mboko in the final, claiming her first title since 2019 and her first big title. It felt like a long time coming, as Muchova’s efforts were finally rewarded with a trophy at the end of the week.

Though she is no stranger to defeating top players, two head-to-head wins had eluded Muchova: Elina Svitolina and especially Coco Gauff. Gauff beat Muchova twice in 2026 alone, including an utter dismantling in the semifinals of Miami. But in Stuttgart, Muchova faced her demons and defeated them.

It started with a match against Gauff in the quarterfinals. Muchova won the first set, but when Gauff launched a monumental comeback to win the second it looked as though the matchup would go the way it always does. But in the third, Muchova refused to lose, going up a break and desperately holding onto it as she successfully consolidated, then served out the match. The seventh time was the charm.

In the semifinals, Muchova was up against Svitolina, who she had an 0-3 record against. Like the match against Gauff, Muchova’s match against Svitolina was hard-fought. And for the first time, it was Muchova who came out on top. Matchup issues are one of the most difficult aspects of tennis, but Muchova overcame two of hers in style, and at the same tournament.

She didn’t manage to go on and lift the trophy, and there is still work to be done as a result if she really wants to be considered one of the elite. But considering that one of Muchova’s biggest problems in her career has been injuries and lack of consistency, she will surely be very pleased with how 2026 has panned out as the season approaches the halfway point, Muchova has been a consistent presence throughout. She has made the round of 16 or better of every tournament she’s played so far, and in the year-end race she’s ahead of the likes of Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, and Iga Swiatek.

The question now is if Muchova can keep this up. She’s shown that she can bring her best level, and now she has to keep it raised. More milestones could be on the way, but only as long as Muchova’s career-defining form holds up.

Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Before this season, although Karolina Muchova had put together some memorable runs, they tended to end with the finishing…

[442
49,48,4305,10459,34302,616,61784,82,593,231225
0":"post-614892","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-tennis","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-coco-gauff","11":"tag-elena-rybakina","12":"tag-elina-svitolina","13":"tag-iga-swiatek","14":"tag-karolina-muchova","15":"tag-sports","16":"tag-tennis","17":"tag-wta-stuttgart
["GET
