After a busy spring, Norco released an aluminium version of its Sight VLT platform<\/a> just on time for Sea Otter. Since we were down in California for the show, I was happy to get to the site a little early one morning to start my day off with a short spin around the Fort Ord trails before resuming the slow, dusty shuffle between booths.<\/p>\n

The latest addition to Norco\u2019s growing eMTB line is an interesting beast. To decode the lengthy naming convention the Canadian brand\u2019s developed for its electric mountain bikes, this is the alloy frame iteration featuring Bosch\u2019s new PX motor. That differentiates it from the release before that, the Sight VLT TQ C with TQ\u2019s minimalist motor and a carbon carbon frame.<\/p>\n

The biggest difference, though, is price. While the Bosch A-range is heavier, and more powerful, both important markers of performance, those differences are details compared to the several thousand dollar difference in entry point between the two models.<\/p>\n

That is, it is no surprise, a bit part of the point in offering this new model. Electric mountain bikes are often positioned as a way to bring more riders into our sport or to provide accessibility to mountain biking through the provision of an assist. But if eMTB\u2019s are $10K, or more, that\u2019s not very accessible or an entry point with a very broad appeal.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

At around $6,000, the A3 model is still expensive, to be clear. But it is literally half the cost of some of the top-end models. That is, as I found out in California, for a bike that is built to be trail-ready out of the box. The components are not top-of-the-line. But they are all perfectly capable of handling regular trail riding. The frame doesn\u2019t feature Norco\u2019s distinctive high-pivot design. But it does carry a lot of premium features, like size-specific rear centers and seat angles, that make it fit and feel like a more expensive machine. DVO suspension, with a Diamond fork and properly gravity-focused DVO Topaz shock, also feel quite solid on trail.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not just marketing. Taking the sight VLT Bosch A3 (which I\u2019m going to abbreviate to Sight A3 from here out, because we\u2019re both tired of reading that), out on the trails around the sea of Sea Otter booths, it immediately feels balanced and comfortable. Like any of the Canadian brand\u2019s other bikes. The PX motor isn\u2019t Bosch\u2019s fanciest, but it still has 600W max power, it still applies that power smoothly. And, at just over 50lbs, it is surprisingly competitive one weight with some other full-power eMTBs. Some of them have more power, or more battery.<\/p>\n

But the 600 Wh battery in the Sight A3\u2019s downtube is still going to carry you a fair distance. My only complaint from the system is that the cranks give off a solid rattle while descending. After stopping several times to make sure nothing was loose, this seemed to be an audible trait of the motor engaging and disengaging as the bike moved around under me. But as for feel? The bike ripped around some loose, fast corners with confidence and plowed through the test-loops 15-foot rock garden without skipping a beat.<\/p>\n

Smart choices like house-brand components and Shimano Cues help Norco hit this price point without sacrificing trail capability. Honestly, Cues should be stock on more eMTBs. It\u2019s developed primarily for longevity. It doesn\u2019t have as many gears as most modern drivetrains, but, let\u2019s be honest here, you really don\u2019t need as many gears when a motor is doing most of the work.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

An hour looping pretty fun, but simple trails isn\u2019t enough for anything more than a first impression. But it is enough to say that Norco\u2019s developed a solid platform that, some motor rattling aside, feels more prestige than its price tag would suggest. A big part of that is fit. But Norco also is willing to take advantage of its already-extensive eMTB range to offer a more price-point version of those bikes.
