Chronicle<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/valkyries\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Golden State Valkyries<\/a> set the bar higher than anyone expected in their inaugural season. Now, in Year 2, how do they not only meet that level but exceed it?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust move on,\u201d head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/natalie-nakase\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Natalie Nakase<\/a> said on Sunday, the first day of Valkyries training camp. \u201cThat was last year, right? I\u2019m always present with where my feet are. So nothing carries over from last year. It\u2019s a brand new year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet in the next breath, Nakase acknowledged that a very important thing does carry over from last year: team chemistry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Despite the opportunity for radical roster change with so many free agents available, the Valkyries instead chose to enhance the strong core they developed last season. They want to keep the successful unit together, and build on what they started in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look around, all the rosters have changed,\u201d Naksase said. \u201cSo I think we\u2019re one of the teams who have built a continuity and maintained that. We did that intentionally. Chronicle<\/p>\n<p>In their Oakland training facility, with plenty of familiar faces, the vibes and energy were high on day one. At the end of practice, the players split into two groups and played a game of \u201cJeopardy,\u201d based on team terminology complete with the iconic music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sports\/jenkins\/article\/valkyries-draft-marta-suarez-22212189.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"Valkyries general manager Ohemaa Nyanin made an unusual draft-day move, selecting Flau\u2019jae Johnson at No. 8 and trading down to the second round, drafting forward Marta Suarez and adding a 2028 second-round pick.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sports\/annkillion\/article\/valkyries-gm-team-building-cred-failed-key-part-22206143.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"Valkyries general manager Ohemaa Nyanin was key as the expansion franchise reached the WNBA playoffs in its inaugural season.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt keeps it fun and competitive,\u201d said guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/kate-martin\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kate Martin,<\/a> noting that her team won, \u201cof course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamaraderie, being the most together team, was our superpower last year,\u201d Martin said. \u201cSo we\u2019re building upon that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several players noted that what was stressed in the first practice were the same basic tenets that led to last year\u2019s success: defense, communication and\u00a0\u2014 more than anything\u00a0\u2014 relentless effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone can see how much fun we had last year, how much we enjoyed each other, so to come back with some familiar faces, it\u2019s exciting,\u201d guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/veronica-burton\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Veronica Burton<\/a> said. \u201cWe\u2019re also welcoming in some new people, so that balance of familiarity and chemistry will carry over but bringing in new skill sets and energy is going to be really exciting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe smashed a lot of expectations, but we have new ones for this year. We always want to compete for a championship. That\u2019s the goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a prolonged offseason, where key events were delayed due to the lengthy labor negotiations, the past week has been a whirlwind with the beginning of free agency and the collegiate draft (when asked for her view of the Valkyries\u2019 newsworthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sports\/article\/valkyries-pick-lsu-guard-flau-jae-johnson-no-8-22204630.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">draft night trade<\/a>, Nakase said, \u201cWe had a plan and we executed it.\u201d) For Nakase, any delays meant more time to prepare for the compressed training camp: the Valkyries\u2019\u00a0only preseason game is April 25 and they open the season in Seattle on May 8.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As camp progresses, the team will continue to integrate new faces. Chronicle<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you weren\u2019t paying attention, they were loud enough to make sure you did,\u201d\u00a0Suarez said. \u201cThis franchise comes from the Warriors so the expectations are high. The support of the community makes expectations even higher. You want to play for that. You want to play for the effort that they\u2019ve put in, but also for the people that you have showing up every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a new season but you have a great history to build upon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Free agent acquisition Kiah Stokes was on hand. The center won three WNBA championships in Las Vegas, two with Nakase as her assistant coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my coach that I could go to for anything back in Vegas,\u201d Stokes said. \u201cI feel very comfortable. Chronicle<\/p>\n<p>Stokes, too, was paying close attention to what the\u00a0Valkyries did last season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they surprised everyone by making the playoffs,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I know that I can elevate this team to another level. I bring championship experience. I played with a lot of players on this roster. \u2026 We\u2019ve got a lot of new pieces that really know how to win, how to play hard, and I\u2019m excited for what we can bring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stokes was drawn to the Valkyries because of the \u201cincredible\u201d identity Nakase was able to create right from the start in the first year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo establish that in year one and to make it a staple is super impressive,\u201d Stokes said. \u201cIt drew me to this organization. She knows what she wants and obviously it works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one thing they harped on during free agency: This is what we want. You either buy in or you don\u2019t come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Valkyries, veterans and newcomers, have bought in.
