The threat was later revised down to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/20\/world\/video\/japan-tsunami-threat-earthquake-strikes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tsunami <\/a>advisory, authorities said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6xkpqp00063b6q2s5gecf5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Japan Meteorological Agency initially issued a three-meter tsunami warning for the Iwate prefecture and parts of Hokkaido and Aomori \u2013 later downgraded to an advisory. It also issued an advisory in other areas of northeastern Japan, estimating a tsunami of up to one meter (3.3 feet). The agency also warned that aftershocks of a similar magnitude could happen in the coming week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6zudps000v3b6qmx73atnw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So far, observations of tsunami waves are all well below the warning level that was issued. One 0.8-meter (2.6-foot) tsunami has struck Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture, where Japan\u2019s national broadcaster NHK has reported the water is still rising. Another 0.4-meter (1.3-foot) tsunami hit Miyako Port in Iwate Prefecture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6xrb3q00083b6q4pkudvxx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US Tsunami Warning System reported that the magnitude of the earthquake off the east coast of Honshu, Japan, was 7.4. The tsunami threat was issued at 8:52 UTC (4:52 a.m. ET). Japan\u2019s national agency later revised its figure up to 7.7 magnitude, although it\u2019s unclear why there is a discrepancy in the numbers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo71ll7j000z3b6qo4k1fxkk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Japan\u2019s disaster management agency said it had issued evacuation orders to 171,957 people in five prefectures.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo71p0t900113b6q3yjwyoms@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            No injuries or damage to homes has been recorded as of yet, chief cabinet secretary Minoru Kihara said in an update Monday evening local time, but the situation is still being assessed. Kihara added that there are 200 power outages across the impacted areas and authorities are working to restore service.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6y7h76000a3b6q2ze4ntz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN\u2019s producer on the ground in Tokyo reported feeling the building they were in shake for about seven minutes when the earthquake struck.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6yq7hx000i3b6q0tivdq15@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has urged residents in affected areas to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/takaichi_sanae\/status\/2046177451030765617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">evacuate immediately<\/a> and said the government had set up an emergency task force.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6yg6ov000c3b6qepzh692s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cResidents in areas where tsunami warnings have been issued should immediately evacuate to higher ground or safer locations such as evacuation buildings,\u201d Takaichi told reporters in a news briefing on Monday, shortly after the earthquake.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6yicta000e3b6qpd40ijat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Authorities are doing their \u201cutmost to assess the damage, implement emergency disaster response measures such as search and rescue operations, and provide timely and accurate information to the public,\u201d Takaichi said. \u201cAt this time, we are still confirming the extent of human and material damage, but we will receive detailed reports shortly and proceed with disaster response efforts.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo72czzf00133b6q5vi272xp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She later warned of the possibility of further advisories due to potential aftershocks off the coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026-04-20t090604z-1847456963-rc2wskadgwj8-rtrmadp-3-japan-earthquake.JPG\" alt=\"Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi speaks to media after Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning Monday.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2455\" width=\"3204\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo75sqn5001i3b6qymv57rl9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A tsunami advisory is the lowest-level alert, which is issued when waves of up to one meter are expected. At that alert level, the Japan Meteorological Agency warns that anybody exposed will be caught in strong tsunami currents, and it advises people to leave coastal areas immediately.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6yrsfg000k3b6qkpooy5bf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The operator of the bullet train service that runs between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori station said the train had been suspended due to a power outage caused by the earthquake, NHK reported. Train services have also been suspended between Akita Station and Morioka Station in northern Japan. All local trains in Iwate prefecture have halted services, according to NHK.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6zux3f000x3b6q0r6gwa8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tokyo Electric Power Company said in a statement that no abnormalities have been detected at its Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear power plants, although it has evacuated workers. The Tohoku Electric Power Company said that its Onagawa nuclear plant and Higashidori nuclear plant further north have also not experienced abnormalities, with radioactive material levels still within normal range.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo6z5mo4000q3b6ql4zvxglh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. It lies on the Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. The worst quake in recent Japanese history was the 9.1-magnitude <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/weather\/japan-earthquake-tsunami-fast-facts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tohoku earthquake in 2011<\/a>, which triggered a major tsunami and nuclear disaster.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo74nd9a001b3b6qscnx6ov6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJapan is one of the least surprising places on Earth for an event like this.
