{"id":617184,"date":"2026-04-20T19:44:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T19:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/617184\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T19:44:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T19:44:14","slug":"as-canadas-tax-deadline-nears-4-things-you-might-not-know-you-can-claim-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/617184\/","title":{"rendered":"As Canada\u2019s tax deadline nears, 4 things you might not know you can claim &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Canadians who are working on filing their , it\u2019s crunch time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Experts say that with this year\u2019s April 30 deadline approaching, there are many benefits Canadians are eligible for that they may not be aware of \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t have to feel like a rush to the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tend to think of tax filing as a once a year sort of event, and then everyone rushes as we get closer to the filing deadline,\u201d said Jeet Dhillon, a senior portfolio manager at TD Wealth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis does not have to be a stressful event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dillion said looking at your past returns can be a good starting point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo down that list, go down line by line, and then kind of think back to, \u2018OK, what\u2019s changed for me in the previous year that maybe wasn\u2019t applicable last year but may be applicable now?&#8217;\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Minor, director of tax at CPA Canada, said if there is missing or unconfirmed information, \u201cnow is the time to track it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo your best estimate and fix when you do have the info,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four examples of things you might not know you can claim on your taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tTutoring services are eligible under certain circumstances\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, tutoring expenses can fall under the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)\u2019s list of \u201cother medical expenses,\u201d which also includes vision care, prescriptions and orthodontics.<\/p>\n<p>This benefit applies to Canadian individuals or students who have a learning disability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTutoring services that are additional to the primary education of a person with a learning disability or an impairment in mental functions, and paid to a person in the business of providing these services to individuals who are not related to the person,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/lines-33099-33199-eligible-medical-expenses-you-claim-on-your-tax-return\/details-medical-expenses.html#ttrng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the CRA states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA medical practitioner must certify in writing that these services are needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Fact or fiction? There is a provision for it,\u201d said Minor. \u201cSo, there\u2019s a lot of things in there that are situation-specific that people may not know about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order to be claimed, the CRA requires receipts and a written letter from an unrelated medical practitioner to certify that the tutoring services are required.<\/p>\n<p>The CRA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=11805979&amp;action=edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">list of medical practitioners<\/a> includes psychologists, behaviour analysts and speech pathologists, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tReceiving medical services outside Canada\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>For Canadians who have sought out medical treatment outside Canada, Dhillon said it is important to keep track of everything to later see what can be received through benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people that have insurance coverage, yes, that\u2019s definitely a good thing, but not everything\u2019s always covered through there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re going to have to pay something out of pocket, and especially if you are going outside the country, these are still medical expenses, and one should kind of keep track of those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Avoiding mistakes and watching for scams as tax deadline nears'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GNMC_04162026_DAVID_NUNES_IMG.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t3:58<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAvoiding mistakes and watching for scams as tax deadline nears\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The CRA states that if \u201cyou travel outside Canada to get medical services, you can claim the amounts you paid to a medical practitioner and a public or licensed private hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the medical treatments can include surgeries, cancer treatment and dental care, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cost of the travel expenses, including accommodations, meals, and parking, when a person needs to travel at least 80 km (one way) from their home to get medical services,\u201d the CRA states.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>A \u201clicensed private hospital\u201d is categorized by the CRA as \u201ca hospital licensed by the jurisdiction that it operates in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tInterest on student loans\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/line-31900-interest-paid-on-your-student-loans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">According to the CRA<\/a>, students can \u201cclaim the total amount of interest actually paid on the qualifying student loan in the current year or any of the previous\u00a0five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the <a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/acts\/s-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canada Student Loans Act<\/a> is a federal act that allows one to claim a non-refundable tax credit for interest on student loans. As a result, the act provides a tax credit with no fixed maximum limit on the interest paid on government student loans.<\/p>\n<p>Any unused amounts can be carried forward for up to five years.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'BCGEU strike interrupts student loan payments'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gktues.png\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:52<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBCGEU strike interrupts student loan payments\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Minor said that this benefit is one that is \u201ccommonly missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you pay student loan interest on a student loan that qualifies, if they\u2019ve got the exact terminology, then it\u2019s got to be a student loan, not a general or a line of credit sort of thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Students are also entitled to tax deductions such as childcare and moving expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Donations to registered charities are also eligible to be claimed on your taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you or your spouse or\u00a0common-law\u00a0partner made a gift of money or other property to certain institutions, you may be able to claim federal and provincial or territorial\u00a0non-refundable tax credits when you file your income tax and benefit return,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/line-34900-donations-gifts.html#eligible-gift\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the CRA states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerally, you can claim part or all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/line-34900-donations-gifts.html#eligible-amount\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">eligible amount<\/a>\u00a0of your gifts, up to\u00a075 per cent of your net income for the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Canadians can claim a tax credit on eligible donors such as registered journalism organizations, a registered national arts service organization, a registered Canadian amateur athletic association\u00a0or universities outside Canada that usually include students from Canada, that are registered with the CRA.<\/p>\n<p>Minor stated that Canadians have a five-year window to claim these benefits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For Canadians who are working on filing their , it\u2019s crunch time.
