{"id":617208,"date":"2026-04-20T19:57:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T19:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/617208\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T19:57:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T19:57:08","slug":"anthony-furey-says-he-wont-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/617208\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthony Furey says he won&#8217;t run"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A former newspaper columnist who finished fourth in Toronto\u2019s mayoral byelection in 2023 says that he will not enter the race for mayor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Anthony Furey made the announcement in a post on social media on Monday, noting that while he did consider a run in October\u2019s municipal election, he ultimately concluded that it was not the right time to throw his hat into the ring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t feel the time is right for me and I\u2019m going to sit this one out. It was an amazing experience running in the last mayoral race and advocating for common sense policies to improve Toronto for the benefit of all. I\u2019m grateful to all the people who have supported me,\u201d Furey said <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/anthonyfurey\/status\/2046202883347988689\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/anthonyfurey\/status\/2046202883347988689\">via a post on X. <\/a> \u201cToronto is facing a number of challenges but it remains an amazing city full of wonderful people \u2014 a city worth fighting for. While I won\u2019t be running this time, I look forward to contributing in other ways by supporting important causes in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019ve been asked if I plan to run for Mayor of Toronto in this year\u2019s election, as I had previously said I was considering it.<\/p>\n<p>My advisors tell me that my latest polling numbers are actually pretty good for a busy hockey dad who\u2019s been keeping a low profile this year.<\/p>\n<p>That said,\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7Yt6MXzX8l\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/7Yt6MXzX8l<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Anthony Furey (@anthonyfurey) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anthonyfurey\/status\/2046202883347988689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 20, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Furey first rose to prominence as a political columnist for the Toronto Sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In 2023, Furey ran in the mayoral by-election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He received 35,899 votes, placing him ahead of well-known politicians like Brad Bradford (9,254 votes), Mitzie Hunter (21,299 votes) and Josh Matlow (35,572 votes).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His decision not to enter October\u2019s race comes after a <a href=\"https:\/\/press.liaisonstrategies.ca\/toronto-chow-46-bradford-35-voters-split-on-island-airport\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/press.liaisonstrategies.ca\/toronto-chow-46-bradford-35-voters-split-on-island-airport\/\">Liaison Strategies survey<\/a> released last week which suggested he would have the support of 11 per cent of decided and learning voters.
