Amazon is set to discontinue multiple of its early Kindle<\/a> devices as of May 20, 2026, a move that will prevent users from being able to buy or borrow more e-books on the devices.<\/p>\n

In an emailed statement to Global News, Amazon<\/a> confirmed that \u201ccustomers using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier\u202fwill no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese models have\u202fbeen supported for at least 14 years \u2014 some as long as 18 years \u2014 but technology has come a long way in that time, and these devices will no longer be supported moving forward,\u201d an Amazon spokesperson wrote.<\/p>\n

The impacted devices are listed as:<\/p>\n

Kindle: Kindle 1st Generation (2007), Kindle 2nd Generation (2009), Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010), Kindle Keyboard (2010), Kindle 4 (2011), Kindle Touch (2011), Kindle 5 (2012), and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012).Kindle Fire Tablets:\u202fKindle Fire 1st Gen (2011), Kindle Fire 2nd Gen (2012), Kindle Fire HD 7 (2012), Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (2012).<\/p>\n

Amazon said that the company is \u201cnotifying those still actively using them and offering promotions to help with the transition to newer devices,\u201d also adding that \u201ctheir accounts and Kindle Library also remain fully accessible through the free Kindle app and Kindle for Web.\u201d<\/p>\n
