A Canadian woman was killed in a shooting<\/a> at Mexico\u2019s<\/a> Teotihuacan pyramids by a man who later took his own life on Monday, Mexican authorities said.<\/p>\n

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand later confirmed that another Canadian was among those injured in the shooting at the popular tourist and archaeological site, about 40 kilometres outside Mexico City.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a result of a horrific act of gun violence, a Canadian was killed and another wounded in Teotihuac\u00e1n, Mexico,\u201d Anand wrote on X. <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts are with their family and loved ones, and Global Affairs consular officials are in touch to provide assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anand extended thanks to Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretary Roberto Velasco \u00c1lvarez, whose ministry expressed \u201csincere condolences to the family of the person who lost their life\u201d in a social media statement.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mexico\u2019s security council confirmed on X<\/a> that the victim was a Canadian woman.<\/p>\n

The Mexico State Secretariat of Security said in its own statement<\/a> that two people were found dead at the scene, including the suspected shooter. Four people were injured by gunfire and two others were hurt in falls, it added.<\/p>\n

Crist\u00f3bal Casta\u00f1eda, the security secretary for Mexico state, told reporters at the scene that the four injured in the shooting included a Canadian and a Russian citizen, as well as two Colombian nationals.<\/p>\n

He said it was too early to identify the shooter or his motivation, but added preliminary reports suggest the gunman acted alone in a \u201cdirect\u201d attack.<\/p>\n

The foreign ministry said it was in contact with the embassies of all foreign nationals who were affected by the shooting.<\/p>\n

Video and photos published by local news organizations appear to show a man standing with a gun on top of one pyramid while people duck for cover.<\/p>\n

A number of gunshots ring out in the videos, which Global News has not independently verified.<\/p>\n

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on X<\/a> that her government was in contact with the Canadian embassy and was investigating the shooting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened today in Teotihuacan deeply pains us,\u201d she wrote in Spanish. \u201cI express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mexico State Gov. Delfina G\u00f3mez \u00c1lvarez said state officials were also investigating and providing security at the scene.<\/p>\n

The Teotihuacan pyramids are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mexico, attracting well over a million international visitors annually. Government figures show 1.8 million tourists visited the pyramids last year.<\/p>\n

The pre-Hispanic city was one of the most important cultural centers in Mesoamerica, and consists of several massive structures built by three ancient civilizations.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s travel advisory for Mexico<\/a>, last updated March 31, says Canadians should exercise a high degree of caution \u201cdue to high levels of criminal activity and kidnapping.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although some parts of Mexico are under regional non-travel advisories due to violence and organized crime, Mexico state \u2014 where Teotihuacan is located \u2014 is not among them.<\/p>\n
