\n\tJennifer Aniston<\/a> admitted in a new Vanity Fair cover<\/a> story that the cast of \u201cFriends<\/a>\u201d had been \u201cmourning\u201d Matthew Perry<\/a> long before his death at 54 years old in October 2023. Perry, who starred as Chandler Bing on NBC\u2019s \u201cFriends\u201d opposite Aniston as Rachel Green, died from the \u201cacute effects\u201d of ketamine. He had long been outspoken about battling substance abuse in Hollywood as \u201cFriends\u201d turned him and the cast into global stars.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe did everything we could when we could,\u201d Aniston told Vanity Fair about trying to help Perry during his long struggle with addiction both during \u201cFriends’\u201d run and after. \u201cBut it almost felt like we\u2019d been mourning Matthew for a long time because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight. As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there\u2019s a part of me that thinks this is better. I\u2019m glad he\u2019s out of that pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter Perry\u2019s death, Aniston paid tribute<\/a> to her friend and former co-star by sharing a heartfelt text message he once sent her. In it, Perry sent a photo of them laughing together on the \u201cFriends\u201d set and wrote: \u201cMaking you laugh just made my day. It made my day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHaving to say goodbye to our Matty has been an insane wave of emotions that I\u2019ve never experienced before,\u201d Aniston wrote in a statement on social media at the time. \u201cHe was such a part of our DNA. We were always the 6 of us. This was a chosen family that forever changed the course of who we were and what our path was going to be. For Matty, he KNEW he loved to make people laugh. As he said himself, if he didn\u2019t hear the \u2018laugh\u2019 he thought he was going to die. His life literally depended on it. And boy did he succeed in doing just that. He made all of us laugh. And laugh hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAniston later spoke to Variety <\/a>and revealed she had texted Perry on the day he died. She added of her co-star: \u201cHe was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy \u2014 that\u2019s all I know\u2026 He was not in pain. He wasn\u2019t struggling. He was happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy,\u201d Aniston added. \u201cHe was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
