What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone, Apple famously tells its users. But sometimes even that isn\u2019t good enough and you want content to disappear, making sure it doesn\u2019t \u201cstay\u201d anywhere. But there\u2019s a crafty workaround.<\/p>\n

So it is with WhatsApp\u2019s forthcoming update, which \u201cwill let messages disappear after being read.\u201d It\u2019s still in development and pre-release, and will come first to Android. But at some point it will turn up on your iPhone.<\/p>\n

This adds to the disappearing or \u201cview once\u201d media and voice messages that WhatsApp already offers iPhone users, similar to features available on Signal<\/a> and elsewhere to ensure chat databases and cloud backups don\u2019t store sensitive messages outside the control of those that have sent them.<\/p>\n

But Apple offers an inadvertent workaround to save this content if you want to. All you need is a Mac, which you can use to \u201cmirror\u201d your iPhone screen. If you view disappearing content in the mirror, you can screenshot it on your Mac.<\/p>\n

WhatsApp<\/a> already warns that \u201cthere are other ways your view once media or voice message can be saved or recorded. For example, recipients can take a photo or video of your view once media with a camera or other device before it disappears.\u201d But the Mac screenshot option is the neatest way to capture a digital copy.<\/p>\n

With the forthcoming feature, WhatsApp leaker WABetaInfo<\/a> says users can set a new disappearing message timer to \u201cAfter Reading.\u201d This will \u201cmake it easier for users to ensure their messages disappear immediately after being seen.\u201d And even if the messages remain unread, \u201cthey will automatically disappear after 24 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

WABetaInfo gives an example: \u201cIf Mark sends a message to Chris using \u2018After Reading.\u2019, the message will vanish from Mark\u2019s chat 15 minutes after being sent.
